Saudi Roshn League Calendar Shake-Up for Gulf 27

The Saudi Roshn League is bracing for a shake-up to its calendar, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take priority over domestic action.

Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and the tournament is already reshaping the league’s schedule.

According to Saudi daily “Al-Riyadiah”, the Roshn League association is preparing a series of fixture changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek manager has asked for the pre-tournament training camp to be extended by an extra seven days, pushing the national side’s preparation window deeper into the league programme and forcing officials to redraw parts of the calendar.

The impact will not be minor. The report states that more than one round will be affected, with the spotlight firmly on the eighth round, currently set for 17 September — less than a week before “Gulf 27” kicks off.

That round carries one of the league’s marquee dates: a clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. Officials now expect that entire matchday to be postponed to clear the way for Donis and his squad.

The coach’s stance is clear. He wants maximum time and the cleanest possible run-in to the Gulf tournament, chasing a title that has eluded Saudi Arabia for 23 years, ever since their last triumph in 2003.

Donis took charge of the national team in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His first major campaign ended in disappointment, with Saudi Arabia exiting at the group stage, bottom of Group 8 with just two points.

Now he is demanding every possible advantage to avoid a repeat on home soil — even if it means pausing the country’s biggest league and shelving its fiercest clásico, at least for a while.
