Alvarez Absent but Influential as Atletico Madrid Defeats Malaga

Julian Alvarez was nowhere near the pitch, yet his shadow hung over the Metropolitano on a night when Atletico Madrid calmly took care of business with a 2-0 win against Malaga.

Diego Simeone’s side controlled the game, did the job, moved on. The story in the stands was very different.

A striker not there, but very much present

Alvarez did not make the squad. No warm-up, no name on the teamsheet, not even a glimpse on the bench. For a player of his profile, that absence was impossible to ignore.

The reaction from sections of the home support made sure it wasn’t.

Every now and then, as Atletico kept Malaga at arm’s length on the pitch, a sharp wave of whistles and angry chants cut through the noise. They weren’t aimed at the referee, nor at the visitors. They were directed at a forward who wasn’t even in the stadium.

The anger has roots. During the recent World Cup, Alvarez made clear he wanted out, publicly requesting a transfer away from the club. That declaration has not been forgiven. A small but loud group of fans used this routine league win to make their feelings crystal clear about a player they now see as disloyal.

Simeone backs the fans – and leaves the door open

Simeone knew the questions were coming. He walked into his post-match press conference having heard the whistles himself, fully aware Alvarez would dominate the conversation more than the three points.

His answer was firm, and it landed squarely on the side of the supporters.

"I have great respect for our people," Simeone said. He pointed back to his long tenure and a familiar stance on the market: "We are open – as we always say – to specific possibilities. You know this after 15 years, I always say that until the window closes, I am open to anything that might happen. That doesn't mean I'm talking about any specific individual, is that clear?"

The message was layered. Respect for the fans. A reminder that nobody is untouchable. And a deliberate refusal to tie those words explicitly to Alvarez, even as everyone in the room knew who he was talking about.

Building a squad amid a storm

The uncertainty around Alvarez’s future hangs over the final stretch of the window, but Simeone cut a confident figure when discussing the club’s backing and the squad he wants in his hands once the deadline passes.

"Right, I’ve always said this, and not just now," he added. "We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had. And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline."

For Simeone, the priority is clear: lock in a strong, balanced group. Whether Alvarez is part of that group remains the unresolved question.

Atletico now walk a tightrope. They must decide if a striker who has openly pushed for an exit can be reintegrated into a dressing room and a stadium where a portion of the crowd has already turned on him, or if a clean break is the only way to restore calm.

The clock is ticking on the window. The tension with Alvarez is no longer a background issue; it’s a fault line running straight through the club’s plans for the new campaign.

Next up on the pitch is Villarreal on Sunday. The football will move on. The noise around Alvarez will not, at least not until Atletico finally decide which side of that fault line they are willing to stand on.
