Saudi Arabia Halts $2.5 Billion Neom Stadium Project Ahead of 2034 World Cup
Saudi Arabia has put the $2.5 billion stadium project in the futuristic Neom megacity on hold, dealing a significant setback to its preparations for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This venue, planned to hold 46,000 spectators, was supposed to be a highlight of the first-ever 48-team World Cup hosted by a single nation.
Flagship Venue Status Suspended
The construction of the Neom stadium, designed to be part of The Line development and stand 350 meters above ground, has now been classified as paused indefinitely. Reports from the construction intelligence service MEED Projects and Reuters confirm there is no set date to resume work. This pause casts doubt on Saudi Arabia’s ability to complete the 15 stadiums it promised FIFA when it was confirmed as the sole host of the expanded tournament.
Shift in National Priorities
The delay reflects a change in government spending priorities under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his Vision 2030 plan. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), remarked in April that The Line project, which includes the stadium, was no longer among the top priorities before 2030.
Tournament Preparations Continue Despite Challenges
Though the Neom stadium suspension follows the halt of another major project—the Mukaab skyscraper in Riyadh—Saudi officials assure that preparations for the 2034 World Cup remain on course. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority stated that considerable progress on infrastructure is already underway, sharing updates on other stadium venues. FIFA has praised Saudi Arabia’s tournament proposal as "absolutely incredible."
Economic Pressures Mount
The kingdom faces growing economic difficulties, with the finance ministry forecasting a budget deficit and a 3.6% drop in real GDP due to falling oil revenues. Regional instability adds to the strain, including disruptions in energy exports and recent attacks near an Aramco facility by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. For Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, successfully hosting the 2034 World Cup remains a key goal for enhancing Saudi Arabia’s global economic and diplomatic stature.
