Rotherham United Signs Defender Sonny Aljofree from Manchester United

Rotherham United have dipped into Manchester United’s academy pool, handing a two-year deal to defender Sonny Aljofree after his release from Old Trafford this summer.

The 22-year-old, comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, joins with the Millers also securing an option to extend his stay by a further year. It is a calculated move: a young defender with elite-club schooling, now looking for a permanent home and regular senior football.

Aljofree arrives with a notable youth pedigree. He lifted the FA Youth Cup with Manchester United in the 2021-22 season, part of a group widely regarded as one of the club’s most promising recent crops. The pathway to the first team, though, never truly opened. He leaves without a senior appearance for United, a familiar story in a squad stacked with defensive options.

So he went looking for minutes. Loan spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County toughened his game and exposed him to the realities of the lower leagues: tight pitches, relentless schedules, and little margin for error. Those stints gave Rotherham something concrete to assess, not just a reputation built on youth honours.

The family name will ring a bell for some. Sonny is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, and there is a certain symmetry in another Aljofree trying to carve out a career in the English game’s unforgiving tiers.

Rotherham have already had a close look. Aljofree has been on trial with the club during pre-season, working within the group and effectively auditioning for this contract. The deal confirms he did enough to convince the staff that he can handle the physical and tactical demands of life with the Millers.

Now comes the real test: turning academy promise and loan experience into a permanent, reliable presence in a back line that will demand both resilience and consistency.
