Roma’s summer transfer strategy has reached its first real crossroads. The club still has Crysencio Summerville pinned as the top attacking target, but the numbers on the Dutchman’s contract are forcing a hard look at a different kind of bet: Mika Godts.
Summerville: the first choice with a heavy price tag
Reports in Italy suggest Roma are ready to put €40 million on the table for Summerville, bonuses included, in a deal with West Ham. From the fee side, there is no hesitation. The problem sits with the player.
Summerville’s camp is asking for between €6 million and €7 million per season. That salary bracket has cooled Roma’s enthusiasm, especially given that, earlier in the week, an agreement on personal terms had seemed close. What looked like a straightforward chase has stalled on the final stretch.
For a club trying to reshape its wage structure while arming Gian Piero Gasperini for a Champions League campaign, that kind of commitment is no small decision.
Godts: the younger, cleaner fit
As the talks with Summerville drag, Tony D’Amico has started to move. The sporting director is scanning the market for alternatives, and one name keeps coming back: Mika Godts.
On the surface, Godts does not come cheap. The Belgian winger would likely cost a transfer fee in the same range as Summerville’s. The difference lies in the pay packet. His wages fall comfortably inside Roma’s current framework, offering far more room to manoeuvre over the length of the contract.
Then there is the age factor. At 21, Godts is four years younger than Summerville. Roma would not just be buying a starter for the present, but a profile that can grow, develop, and potentially explode in value.
His output already backs up the excitement. Last season at Ajax, Godts delivered 17 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances, a breakout year that has not gone unnoticed. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have both been linked in recent months, a measure of how widely his name is now circulating in recruitment meetings across Europe.
Roma’s familiar dilemma
For Roma, this is a decision they know well: pay a premium in wages for a more finished product, or invest similar overall money in a player with higher upside and a lower immediate cost to the salary bill.
Summerville offers proven impact and a clearer sense of what he is right now. Godts offers a cheaper wage structure, a longer runway, and the chance to mould him into the kind of wide forward Gasperini can weaponise.
Time, though, is not on D’Amico’s side. Gasperini is waiting for his marquee winger, and the Champions League calendar will not pause while Roma agonise over the final choice.
