Rodri Faces Surgery and Real Madrid Pursuit
Manchester City’s plans for the new season have been hit from two directions at once. Rodri, the metronome of their midfield and the man Pep Guardiola built his side around, has undergone back surgery just as Real Madrid have opened talks to prise him away from the Etihad.
For Enzo Maresca, preparing for his first campaign in charge, it is a brutal early reminder of life at the top. The Italian would have expected to lean heavily on Rodri as he reshapes City in his own image. Instead, he may not have him for the Community Shield – and might not have him at all.

Real Madrid move from admiration to action
While Rodri recovers, the transfer storm is gathering. Real Madrid have moved beyond admiration and are now actively working to sign him.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Madrid have made contact with City and received the green light from club president Florentino Perez to push ahead with a deal. This is not a speculative enquiry. The report adds a sharper edge: Rodri’s dream, Romano claims, is to play for Real Madrid, and he has been pushing for the move for a long time. That detail changes the tone of the saga. This is not simply a case of a superclub circling a reluctant star; it is a potential parting of ways driven by the player’s own ambition.
Madrid have indicated they are prepared to go beyond €50m (£42.8m). City, unsurprisingly, are expected to demand significantly more for a midfielder who has been central to their era of dominance and is still in his prime.
City brace for a fight
Inside the Etihad, there is an expectation that other clubs will join the chase. That is the market reality for an elite midfielder with a proven record in the biggest games. Yet Rodri’s stance is already clear: his preference is Madrid.
