Rodri Rejects Barcelona as Champions League Favorites, Highlights Key Areas for Improvement
Rodri Keeps Barcelona's Champions League Hopes Grounded
Rodri, who recently joined Barcelona from Manchester City, has quickly become a vital part of the team. Despite their strong hold on La Liga with consecutive titles, he remains cautious about the club’s chances in Europe’s top competition.
Barcelona have not lifted the Champions League trophy in 12 years, a gap they are eager to close. This ambition played a big role in signing the 30-year-old midfielder, who has settled into the team seamlessly.
Realistic View on European Glory
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Rodri expressed a clear perspective on the club’s status among Europe’s best. He said the Champions League is within reach but insisted that Barcelona are not the favorites. According to him, the team must improve certain aspects to truly compete at the highest level.
"The Champions League is achievable, but I don’t think we’re favourites. Obviously, I see it as a realistic title for us. It’s that final step we need to take to establish ourselves and show Europe what kind of team we are," Rodri shared.
He emphasized that talent alone won’t guarantee success and that winning the Champions League demands more than just skill. The team needs to sharpen its approach, and players like him were brought in to help the squad grow and handle the unique challenges of this competition.
The Importance of Fine Margins and Tactical Discipline
Recent exits from the tournament, including losses to Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, exposed Barcelona’s defensive weaknesses and disciplinary problems. Rodri believes mastering these critical moments can make or break their progress.
"I don’t think the Champions League is a tournament where the best team necessarily wins. It’s a tournament of moments, and understanding those moments," he said. "That’s perhaps the area where this team still has room to improve."
Rodri suggested that focusing on consistency and defensive solidity might be more beneficial than relying solely on attacking brilliance.
"Perhaps it’s better not to be quite as good offensively but to be more consistent and more solid. The teams that have been able to win it have shown you that. That’s where we have room to improve, and I’m sure we will," he added.
Learning from Past Setbacks
Rodri also touched on the value of experience gained through tough losses. Drawing from his own journey to eventually winning the Champions League with Manchester City, he stressed the need for patience and learning.
"Before you win, you have to lose and you have to learn," the World Cup winner stated. "There’s a learning process in that experience, and players improve year after year."
With this mindset, Barcelona aims to turn previous disappointments into lessons as they target success in upcoming European fixtures.
