Rodri Emphasizes Barcelona’s Need for Stability Over Flair to Triumph in Europe
Rodri Highlights the Importance of Solidity for Barcelona's European Success
Rodri, Barcelona’s new signing, has offered a clear-eyed view on the club’s chances in the Champions League. The Spanish midfielder stresses that tactical discipline must take priority over style if Barcelona hopes to reclaim their place atop European football.
Facing Reality in Europe's Toughest Competition
After joining Barcelona from Manchester City this summer, Rodri has become a key figure in coach Hansi Flick’s revamped squad. At 30, he arrives with an impressive record, including four Premier League titles and a historic Champions League win in 2023, where he scored the decisive goal against Inter. Despite the excitement around his arrival at Camp Nou, Rodri keeps expectations measured.
"I see the Champions League as a possible target, but it’s the last step we need to show Europe the team we are," he said. "We aren’t favorites yet. We have to understand what it takes to be champions, and this team still needs to improve."
The Value of Tactical Maturity
Having spent years under Pep Guardiola, Rodri knows what it takes to succeed in Europe. Although Barcelona has won the Champions League five times, their last final appearance was in 2015. Recent campaigns ended in semi-final exits or earlier, showing that talent alone isn’t enough.
"The Champions League isn’t about being the best team overall," Rodri remarked. "It’s a tournament of moments and understanding them. That’s the gap this team needs to close."
Lessons from Past Failures
Barcelona's recent European runs have been hurt by defensive lapses and critical mistakes, such as last season’s quarter-final loss to Atletico Madrid. Rodri points out the need to control crucial moments like red cards and penalties to advance in knockout ties.
"It might mean being less aggressive offensively but more consistent and solid," he noted. "Those small margins decide whether you move on or not."
Experience as a Teacher
The current squad is enjoying a strong start to the season, winning their first five La Liga games and scoring 21 goals before dominating Feyenoord 5-1 in their Champions League opener. Yet, Rodri believes real growth comes through learning from setbacks.
"Teams that win show you the path—it’s about learning and experience," he said. "You have to lose and learn before winning. I played many Champions League matches before finally lifting the trophy. Players gain knowledge year after year."
