Rio Ngumoha's Transfer to Bayern Munich Collapses – Liverpool Gains Advantage
For a few days, it looked as if one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects was slipping through their fingers. Now, the picture has changed again.
Bayern Munich’s move for 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha has collapsed, despite the German club having reached what was described as a “full verbal agreement” with the player and his camp.
The twist keeps one of Anfield’s most exciting young talents on Merseyside – at least for now.
Bayern’s secret target brought into the light
Ngumoha’s name has been whispered around Liverpool’s academy for some time, but last season he broke into the wider conversation. Signed from Chelsea as a highly rated teenager, he produced a standout 2025/26 campaign in an otherwise flat year for the club.
While Liverpool laboured, Ngumoha injected energy and invention. At 17, he was one of the few genuine positives in a season that cost Arne Slot his job, and many inside and outside the club felt he merited more minutes than he received.
That promise put him firmly on Bayern’s radar.
Vincent Kompany, rebuilding the German giants and hunting for a winger to compete with Luis Díaz, had already seen Bayern miss out on Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a £69m deal. The search for an alternative led them to Ngumoha.
On Friday, David Ornstein reported that Bayern were exploring a move, with Ngumoha identified as their primary target for the left flank. The player was aware of their interest. Liverpool’s stance, though, was clear: not for sale, and an attack to be strengthened rather than stripped.
Verbal agreement, sudden collapse
Behind the scenes, the story ran deeper.
German journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Bayern had been working on Ngumoha “for weeks”, keeping him as a “secret candidate” while they pursued other attacking options. According to his report, negotiations accelerated and culminated on Tuesday, 26 May, when Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp reached a full verbal agreement.
Kompany had personally spoken to the teenager and approved the deal. Ngumoha, still only 17, was lined up as an “absolute priority” back-up to Díaz, part of a wider attacking reshuffle that also involved attempts to sign Anthony Gordon.
Then it fell apart.
Plettenberg reported that the proposed move collapsed on Thursday “for the time being”. No transfer, no breakthrough, no immediate switch to Bavaria. The reasons have not been detailed publicly, but the outcome is simple: Ngumoha remains a Liverpool player, and Bayern must look elsewhere as they weigh other targets such as Brown and Saibari.
Liverpool’s gem stays put – and a new era beckons
Inside Liverpool, there has long been a belief that Ngumoha could explode next season. Some at the club view him as a potential solution that could save millions in the transfer market if his development continues on its current trajectory.
That belief now meets opportunity.
Andoni Iraola’s arrival promises a far more aggressive, front-foot style than the one that suffocated Liverpool’s play last season. High tempo, brave in possession, relentless pressing – a framework built for fearless young attackers who want to run at defenders and break lines.
Ngumoha fits that profile. He already showed he can shine in difficult circumstances; under a coach more inclined to unleash him, his ceiling suddenly looks even higher.
Bayern came calling early, tried to steal a march, and thought they had their man. The agreement was there, the plan was clear, the manager convinced. Then the deal evaporated.
For Liverpool, that collapse might prove to be one of the most important moments of their summer. The question now is not whether Ngumoha will be part of Iraola’s plans.
It’s how big a role he is about to play.
