Reiss Nelson's Arsenal Exit: West Ham Negotiations

Reiss Nelson’s long Arsenal audition is edging towards its conclusion, with West Ham in talks over a deal that would see the winger drop into the Championship for a promotion tilt.

The 26-year-old has spent the last two seasons living life on loan, first at Brentford and then at Fulham, and returned to north London this summer hoping to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s plans. That hope has quickly faded. Arteta does not see him as part of his squad for the coming campaign and Arsenal are actively working on an exit.

West Ham have stepped in. The Hammers, gearing up for a serious push to get out of the Championship at the first attempt, have approached Arsenal to test the waters on Nelson’s availability and are now in negotiations over the structure of a potential deal.

From Arsenal’s side, there is no reluctance. With Nelson into the final year of his contract, the club view a move to West Ham as a clean solution and have given encouragement to their London rivals. They would prefer a permanent sale this summer rather than another temporary fix.

The complication sits with the player. It is not yet clear whether Nelson is prepared to drop down a division at this stage of his career, even for a club with West Ham’s resources and promotion ambitions. Personal terms have not been discussed and Nelson is still weighing up his options.

There is interest from abroad, including from Portugal, where Marco Silva is now in charge. Silva knows Nelson well, having taken him to Fulham two seasons ago, and that relationship could yet shape the winger’s decision if a concrete opportunity emerges.

Arsenal, though, have tried to protect themselves. If they do sanction another loan instead of a sale, they hold an option to extend Nelson’s contract by 12 months, a clause designed to guard against losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Nelson is not the only senior attacker who could leave before the window closes. Arsenal are also open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira as they look to reshape the squad and generate funds.

Jesus, who has been linked with Napoli, has been valued by Arsenal at up to £20million. At this stage, there has been no formal approach from the Italian club, but the price is set and the message is clear: a serious bid would be listened to.

Vieira, whose Arsenal career has never fully ignited, is likewise available if the right offer lands on the table, with the club keen to streamline options in midfield and attack.

Lower down the pecking order, Arsenal are also working on a loan move for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford. The plan is straightforward: secure him regular first-team football this season and accelerate his development away from the relative comfort of academy and bench duty.

For Nelson, the picture is more delicate. A permanent break from Arsenal now, a drop to the Championship, and a leading role in a promotion chase with West Ham would change the trajectory of his career. The talks are active. The clubs are aligned. The decision, in the end, will rest with him.
