Referee Injured in Pre-Season Friendly Incident
A pre-season friendly in eastern France turned ugly on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a brawl between players.
The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.
What had been a routine tune-up suddenly snapped.
Flashpoint before the break
Around the 40th minute, a seemingly ordinary bit of shirt-tugging between two opposing players escalated into a confrontation. The pair squared up, chests pressed together, words flying. Teammates sprinted in, some to separate, others to join the dispute. The scene quickly turned chaotic.
Demoncay moved in to calm things down, stepping between the clusters of players. In the crush of bodies, she was knocked off balance and went down heavily, video on social media showed, landing awkwardly as the scuffle raged around her.
All of it unfolded in front of a large pitchside sign bearing a bitterly ironic message: “Respect the referee.”
She stayed on the turf for several minutes, visibly in pain and clutching her arm, as assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel rushed in. The melee broke up, the noise died down, and concern for the referee took over.
Back on her feet, then out of the game
After treatment, Demoncay managed to continue, but not in the middle. When play resumed, she switched roles and took up duties as an assistant referee on the touchline, an attempt to see out the half despite the blow.
She did not return after the interval. Another assistant stepped in for the second half, with local reports later confirming that Demoncay had sustained a concussion in the incident.
On the pitch, Metz went on to win the friendly 3-1, but the scoreline felt secondary to what had happened to the match official.
Fortuna Sittard’s report on the game mentioned the clash only briefly, calling it a “remarkable moment” without elaborating. Metz made no reference to the incident in their own coverage.
A summer fixture meant to sharpen fitness and tactics instead left a stark image: a young referee lying on the grass, injured while trying to impose control, beneath a banner demanding respect that, for a few reckless seconds, the players simply ignored.
