Real Madrid Open to Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Shows Interest
Manchester United’s long search for a specialist holding midfielder has brought them back to a familiar shop window – and a familiar club. Real Madrid are prepared to sell Aurelien Tchouameni, with United’s interest described in Spain as “strong” after the Frenchman’s World Cup campaign ended.
United have made an enquiry for the 26-year-old, who fits almost perfectly the profile the club have been chasing for years: a genuine No 6, in his mid-20s, already hardened by the highest level of club and international football.
Madrid ready to cash in
Tchouameni joined Real Madrid from Monaco four years ago in a deal worth an initial €80m, rising to €100m, and was widely viewed as the long-term anchor of their midfield. He is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028, and recent reports suggested he had agreed an extension, but no such deal has been officially announced.
New coach Jose Mourinho had initially planned to keep Tchouameni as part of his core, yet the 15-time European champions are now willing to cash in if the offer is right. The landscape around him has shifted quickly.
Madrid have already moved to reshape their midfield, bringing in Bernardo Silva, who operated in a deeper role for Manchester City last season, while Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde remain key figures. Both Camavinga and Valverde are contracted until a year beyond Tchouameni’s current deal, strengthening Madrid’s hand and giving them room to trade.
At the same time, Madrid have been linked with Spain international Rodri, named the best player at the World Cup and out of contract at City next year. A move for the 30-year-old this summer has been floated, and any serious push for Rodri would only increase the likelihood of Madrid listening to offers for Tchouameni.
United’s midfield puzzle
For United, the interest is hardly a surprise. They have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to bolster their midfield options, but neither is a natural out-and-out defensive midfielder. The hole at the base of midfield remains.
Tchouameni ticks almost every box on their recruitment sheet. He has started a World Cup final for France. He has a Champions League winner’s medal with Real Madrid. He sits neatly in United’s preferred age bracket of 22–26 for major signings. And, crucially, he is available – at a price.
This is not the first time United have hovered around the Frenchman. They were offered the chance to sign him from Monaco in 2021, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pushing hard for a midfielder and had Declan Rice high on his wish list. United, though, had not budgeted for a major midfield arrival that summer and passed on Tchouameni. Madrid pounced.
The irony has lingered ever since. When United finally moved to solve their midfield crisis in 2022, they spent £70m on Casemiro – the very player Madrid had decided to replace with Tchouameni.
Lessons from Madrid transfers past
United’s record with high-profile signings from the Bernabeu is mixed at best. Casemiro arrived at 30, in the immediate aftermath of a 4-0 humiliation at Brentford, and initially looked like a transformative figure. He impressed in his first and last seasons but was also part of two of the poorest United sides in 34 and 51 years. The club released him last month.
Raphael Varane, another serial Champions League winner, joined at 28 in 2021. His pedigree was unquestioned, but injuries repeatedly disrupted his rhythm. He still started in League Cup and FA Cup final victories, yet United again chose not to extend his stay and let him go.
Angel Di Maria remains the most vivid warning. Signed in 2014 for a then British record £59.7m, he lasted less than a year at Old Trafford before departing, his United spell remembered more for frustration than flair. When he returned with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, the boos inside Old Trafford were deafening.
Those scars will hang over any negotiation for Tchouameni. United know the risk of paying elite prices for players leaving Madrid. Madrid know exactly how to extract maximum value from a seller’s market.
A pivotal call for both clubs
For Real Madrid, offloading Tchouameni at the right fee could help finance another midfield evolution, potentially clearing the path for Rodri and reinforcing Mourinho’s attempt to remodel his squad without losing competitive edge.
For United, this is about more than one player. It is about finally landing the specialist defensive midfielder they have chased through multiple managers, multiple windows and multiple missteps.
They passed on Tchouameni once. They watched him become the man chosen to succeed Casemiro in Madrid. Now, with the roles potentially reversing and another rebuild under way at Old Trafford, the question is stark: do they dare walk away again?
