Real Madrid Targets Rodri as Summer Transfer Strategy Shifts

Real Madrid have redrawn their summer blueprint and placed Rodri Hernández at the heart of it. According to The Athletic, the Spanish midfielder has moved from a discarded idea to a central objective, with the club now operating under the assumption that he will be a Real Madrid player next season.

It is a dramatic shift. Not long ago, Madrid had effectively ruled out a move for Rodri. The price, the difficulty of prising him from Manchester City, the sense that the timing was wrong – all of it pointed in another direction.

Then came the World Cup.

Rodri’s performances on the biggest stage have clearly altered the landscape. His authority in midfield, his control under pressure, the way he dictated games from deep: those displays impressed Madrid’s hierarchy enough to reopen a file they had quietly closed. There is still more than a month left in the transfer window. Time to negotiate. Time to reshape squads. Time, perhaps, for a cornerstone of City’s midfield to change shirts.

The situation remains delicate. Rodri is under contract, and City are not in the habit of being strong-armed into sales. Yet the combination of a manager’s departure, a squad refresh and a player unwilling to commit long term shifts the balance. It makes serious talks with Real Madrid not just possible, but likely.

Madrid, confident and already planning around his arrival, are behaving as if the outcome is only a matter of when, not if. City must now decide: double down on a new era with Rodri at its core, or cash in and accelerate the rebuild without him.
