Real Madrid’s summer isn’t done yet. Not by a long way.
Six new faces are already through the door, but inside Valdebebas the message is clear: the rebuild is still in motion. Journalist Juanma Rodriguez has claimed the club are preparing three more signings before the window shuts – and they are not minor tweaks.
Six signings… and counting
Real Madrid moved early. Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries were all secured before the World Cup, a statement that the squad would not drift into the new season unchanged. Carlos Espi and Yan Diomande have since been promoted into the first-team setup, adding energy and competition in training.
On paper, that looks like a complete overhaul. In reality, it is only the foundation.
Rodriguez, speaking about Madrid’s plans and relayed by Defensa Central, insists the market work is far from over. He says the club are lining up three more additions, with a centre-back and a midfielder among the priorities.
“There will be more moves, from what I'm told. I understand there will be three signings. One of them is a centre-back and another a midfielder. I mean, beyond what has already been signed,” Rodriguez explained.
The indication is stark: this is not a light refresh. It is a deep reconstruction shaped around José Mourinho’s demands.
Mourinho’s blueprint: steel at the back, balance in the middle
Mourinho has already been given experience and quality, but he wants more control over the spine of his team.
A new centre-back sits at the top of the list. The Portuguese coach wants greater depth and, crucially, another defender capable of genuinely challenging for a starting place rather than simply filling a squad number. With Madrid expected to fight on multiple fronts, Mourinho is pushing for a back line that can absorb injuries, suspensions and dips in form without losing authority.
Just ahead of them, the midfield remains under scrutiny. Mourinho is targeting a positional midfielder – someone disciplined, tactically sharp, and willing to sit in front of the defence to provide structure and protection. That specific profile has been one of his priorities since he first walked into Valdebebas.
This is not about glamour. It is about balance.
Bastoni, Asencio and a defensive domino effect
Within that context, one name keeps coming back: Alessandro Bastoni.
The Italian defender is among the players most closely linked to Mourinho’s plans and is understood to be one of his preferred options for the centre of defence. Bastoni’s arrival, though, is not straightforward. It would hinge on Raul Asencio leaving the club first.
Asencio does not figure in Mourinho’s plans, and his situation could trigger a chain reaction in Madrid’s centre-back department. A departure would open both space in the squad and room in the wage bill, potentially clearing the way for a move for Bastoni or a defender of similar stature.
Until that piece moves, the rest of the puzzle cannot fully lock into place.
Midfield hunt still wide open
The picture in midfield is less defined but just as active.
Real Madrid are tracking several options, including Adam Wharton and Kees Smit, as they work through the shortlist for that key positional role. The club have not settled on a final name, and there is no guarantee that either Wharton or Smit will be the one who walks through the door.
What is clear is the intent. The search is ongoing, the profile is fixed, and the club are aligned with Mourinho on the need for another midfielder who can anchor the side.
Six signings are already in the books. Three more are expected. The window may be ticking down, but Madrid’s rebuild is still very much alive – and the next move could define Mourinho’s first season back in the Spanish capital.
