Real Madrid Sells Victor Valdepenas to Fiorentina
Real Madrid have drawn a firm line under Victor Valdepenas’ time at Valdebebas, confirming the sale of the highly rated Castilla defender to Fiorentina in a deal that underlines both clubs’ long-term intentions.
The 19-year-old left-back swaps the Bernabeu for Florence for a fee of eight million euros, signing a contract with the Viola that runs all the way to 2031. It is a bold commitment from the Serie A side and a calculated play from Madrid, who have given up the player but not the bet on his future.
Because Madrid have not walked away completely. The Spanish champions retain 50 per cent of any future sale, a clear signal that they still believe the academy graduate could develop into a major asset. If Valdepenas explodes in Italy, they will feel it in their balance sheet.
For the player, this is a leap. Last season he tasted the top flight only briefly, making a single La Liga appearance under Xabi Alonso, coming off the bench against Deportivo Alaves, as reported by Spanish newspaper Marca. One cameo, but enough to show he had reached the fringes of one of the most demanding squads in Europe.
His real work, though, came away from the spotlight. Valdepenas joined Real Madrid in 2018 at the age of 11 and climbed the ladder through the youth ranks, spending six seasons in the club’s academy. He capped that journey by lifting the UEFA Youth League last season, a competition that has become a showcase for the next wave of talent in Madrid’s system.
The club’s official farewell carried the tone reserved for those they feel have done things the right way. In their statement, Madrid underlined his six seasons in the academy, his first-team debut and his Youth League triumph, and thanked Valdepenas “for his commitment throughout these years,” extending their good wishes to him and his family as they embark on “this new stage of their lives.”
For Fiorentina, this is exactly that: a new stage. A 19-year-old, left-footed defender on a long contract, secured before the season has even truly begun, and just hours before the two clubs meet in a friendly on Saturday. The timing is no coincidence. The deal will add an extra layer of intrigue when the sides face each other, the present of Madrid crossing paths with a piece of their past who now belongs to Florence.
Madrid, meanwhile, continue a familiar pattern. They develop, they promote, they sell – but they rarely shut the door completely on players they rate. With half of Valdepenas’ sporting rights still in their hands, they will watch his Italian adventure with more than passing interest.
