Real Madrid walked into pre-season expecting to polish details. Instead, Jose Mourinho has found a problem he cannot ignore.

Instead, these early games have left him needing to rebuild confidence and prove he can handle the demands of the Bernabéu.
Rüdiger’s case is different. This is not about potential; it is about recovery. The German international has the experience, the medals, the scars of big nights. What Mourinho is questioning is his current physical level and whether he can still reach the heights of his peak years. The early signs of pre-season do not yet offer a convincing answer.
Market questions, defensive answers
Inside the club, the debate has already started. Florentino Pérez has not closed the door on bringing in a top-tier centre-back if the right opportunity appears before the window shuts. That possibility grows if there are departures that open space on the wage bill and in the dressing room.

Mourinho knows he cannot afford to carry a soft underbelly into a season where every mistake will be punished. Pre-season is supposed to expose flaws so they can be fixed. The question now is whether Madrid treat these defensive errors as a temporary blip or as a clear signal to act.
