Real Madrid have moved to Plan B. And it is a bold one.
With growing acceptance in the Bernabeu offices that Rodri is on course to join Barcelona, Florentino Perez and his recruitment team have triggered a €30 million contingency plan built not on experience, but on potential: Ajax’s 18-year-old midfield prodigy Mokio.
From finished article to raw diamond
Rodri was the dream. A ready-made general for the centre of the pitch, the Manchester City and Spain lynchpin was viewed as the perfect figure to bring leadership, control and tactical authority to Madrid’s midfield. An established, €60m-plus cornerstone for the here and now.
That plan is slipping away.
Rodri is now reportedly leaning towards Barcelona’s sporting project at Camp Nou, a scenario that has forced Madrid to pivot sharply. Instead of doubling down on an expensive, fully formed anchor, they are pushing their chips towards a teenager still carving out his name in Amsterdam.
Mokio is not a like-for-like replacement. He is a gamble on tomorrow.
The Ajax education
If Madrid are going to bet on youth, Ajax is a familiar and trusted marketplace.
By the time Mokio signed his latest contract extension in April 2026, he had already collected 48 senior appearances and six goals for the Dutch giants. Those are serious numbers for an 18-year-old operating in one of Europe’s most scrutinised talent factories.
He is primarily a defensive midfielder, but that tag barely covers the full picture. Madrid’s scouts see a player who can shift between roles, adapt to different tactical shapes and still impose himself physically. Versatility has become a key currency at the top level, and Mokio has it in abundance.
The reports reaching Madrid paint a profile they know well: strong in duels, comfortable on the ball, capable of progressing play and with the engine to patrol large zones of the pitch. Not yet the finished product, but with “immense room for growth” – exactly the type of profile the club has built around in recent years.
Ajax hold the cards
Signing him will not be simple.
Ajax are under no immediate pressure to sell. Mokio is an academy jewel, tied down to a long-term deal running until 30 June 2031. That contract is a statement: Ajax intend to control the timing and the price of his departure.
The initial figure being floated around Madrid is €30m. In today’s market, for an 18-year-old with his experience and upside, that number is more an opening line than a realistic final fee. Ajax know his value, and they know exactly how much the Spanish giants want to secure the next big thing before everyone else joins the bidding.
For Madrid, the challenge is twofold. They must convince Ajax that this is the right moment to cash in on a player they have just tied down long term. At the same time, they need to sell Mokio on the idea of leaving guaranteed minutes in Amsterdam for the pressure cooker of the Bernabeu, where competition for places is relentless and patience can be thin.
Waiting on Rodri
For now, everything is on standby.
Madrid will not move formally for Mokio until Rodri’s proposed switch to Barcelona is officially confirmed. The moment that deal is sealed, the landscape changes. The gap in Madrid’s midfield succession plan becomes permanent, and the urgency to fill it spikes.
When that happens, the club are expected to accelerate talks with Ajax and the player’s camp. The idea is clear: move quickly, stay ahead of rival suitors and lock down a talent whose value could explode over the next few seasons.
It is a familiar playbook. Madrid have built a modern powerhouse by betting early on elite teenagers before their price tags become astronomical. Mokio, in many ways, fits that pattern perfectly.
