Rayan Ait-Nouri is not treating his first goal for City as a souvenir. He is treating it as a starting gun.
Given license to roam higher up the pitch in Enzo Maresca’s evolving system, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender stepped into an advanced role behind striker Mubama in the win over the K-League XI, flanked by Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo. “I would like to,” he said when asked if he wants to score on a regular basis. “It was my first goal for City, and it's a part of the game I really enjoy. I have always tried to play in an attacking way, but I don't score all the time.”

Maresca pushed him into the pockets between the lines, closer to the danger zone, and Ait-Nouri responded with the kind of attacking thrust that has long hinted at a higher ceiling.
“It's a real sensation for me, and I want to learn every day, work more and more to add as much to my game as I can,” he said, underlining a mindset that fits neatly with Maresca’s demand for constant evolution.
Maresca’s tactical framework is already reshaping the roles of his players. Ait-Nouri, 25, operated almost as a hybrid playmaker, stepping in off the flank to combine with Foden and Semenyo while offering a late arrival around Mubama. The structure gave City more bodies in advanced areas and, crucially, put one of their most adventurous players closer to goal.
The reward was that long-awaited first strike in City colours and, just as importantly, a first “positive result” of the Maresca era. Pre-season wins do not define campaigns, but they do set tones. This one suggested a side beginning to understand the demands of their new coach.
The test now hardens.
City close their pre-season tour with a high-profile meeting against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, a fixture that will offer a far sharper measure of where Maresca’s ideas stand against elite European opposition.
“It will be a different game than the last two games,” Ait-Nouri said. “We really enjoy playing this kind of game against one of the better teams in Europe; it will help us really prepare for next season.
“We know about Atletico's level, and it will be good to play them before we face Arsenal next week.”
Atletico first. Arsenal straight after. For Maresca, it is a demanding schedule by design. For Ait-Nouri, it is exactly the stage he wants: a chance to prove that his new attacking brief is not a pre-season experiment, but the shape of his City future.
