Rangers Sign South African Defender Olwethu Makhanya from MLS
Rangers have turned again to the global market for their rebuild, completing the signing of South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old centre-back becomes the club’s eighth summer arrival and has committed to a four-year deal at Ibrox, with an option for a further season.
Makhanya arrives on the back of a rapid rise in the United States. He broke into Philadelphia’s first team last year and made 53 appearances in Major League Soccer, quickly establishing himself as a regular in one of the league’s more structured, defensively disciplined sides.
For the player, this move is the realisation of a long-held ambition.
"I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started," he said after signing.
"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true."
Those dreams were forged far from Glasgow. Makhanya came through at Stellenbosch in South Africa, where his form at domestic level pushed him into the national conversation. His progress was underlined when he was included in South Africa's squad for the 2026 World Cup, a significant marker for a defender still in the early stages of his career, even if he did not feature at this summer’s finals.
Rangers manager Derek McInnes believes the attributes that carried Makhanya from Stellenbosch to MLS and now to Scotland will translate to the demands of the Scottish Premiership.
"He's got a lot of athleticism and good potential," McInnes said ahead of his side’s league opener away to Dundee United on Friday.
"And while he's coming from the MLS, to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."
The challenge now is stark. From the tempo of MLS to the intensity of Ibrox, from World Cup squads to the expectation of weekly dominance, Makhanya steps into a club where potential is only the starting point.
