PSG Pursues Unprecedented Third Consecutive Champions League Title

PSG Aims for Historic Third Straight Champions League Win

Paris Saint-Germain starts this season with a rare goal: to secure a third consecutive Champions League trophy, a feat achieved by only a few clubs in European history.

According to L'Équipe, just three teams have won the European Cup three times in a row: Real Madrid, Ajax Amsterdam, and Bayern Munich. PSG won their second straight title on 30 May 2026, defeating Arsenal after extra time. The match ended 1-1 and was decided 4-3 on penalties.

During the old European Cup era, building dynasties was simpler. The competition involved one club per country—sometimes two if the holders weren't domestic champions—and typically required seven matches to win. Between 1956 and 1992, eight teams successfully defended their titles, making repeat championships more common.

Since the introduction of multiple entrants from major leagues, defending the title has become much harder. Only Real Madrid under Zinédine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) and PSG under Luis Enrique (2025, 2026) have retained the trophy in recent years.

This context highlights how far PSG climbed last spring and sets the stage for their current pursuit of a third straight crown.
