Mauricio Pochettino Calls for Tottenham to Be Awarded 2016-17 Premier League Title After Chelsea Financial Violations

Pochettino Demands 2016-17 Title for Tottenham Following Chelsea's Financial Rule Breaches

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has made a bold claim that Spurs should be declared the champions of the 2016-17 Premier League season. This comes after Chelsea admitted to committing 74 breaches of FA financial regulations during Roman Abramovich's ownership, resulting in a £10 million fine and a suspended transfer ban earlier this year. Pochettino believes that a mere financial penalty is not enough and insists the title rightly belongs to Tottenham.

The 2016-17 Season Under Scrutiny

The Football Association uncovered that between 2011 and 2018, Chelsea made illicit payments to unregistered agents connected to major transfers. These signings included key players like Eden Hazard, David Luiz, and Nemanja Matic, who played significant roles in securing the Premier League trophy under Antonio Conte's management that season.

Tottenham finished second, seven points behind Chelsea, despite having the best attack, strongest defense, and fewest losses in the league. Pochettino argues this success was overshadowed by an uneven playing field due to Chelsea’s rule violations.

“We Deserve to Be Champions”

“I’ve said that we should win one title, one Premier League. We should have been awarded it. If that was true, and that happened, for sure we deserve to be champions for that year. Because we were the second best.”

Pochettino emphasized that Tottenham did not compete under the same conditions as Chelsea. “They admitted to breaking the rules, so that’s it? The title should go to the team that finished second. We didn’t compete with the same rules. They scored goals and won games, but it’s fair to say we didn’t start the season on equal terms.”

He suggested that if all clubs had followed the same financial rules, Tottenham might have signed players who could have strengthened their squad even further. “It’s not complaining, it’s the truth.”

Facing His Former Club Head-On

Despite managing Chelsea in the 2023-24 season, Pochettino did not hold back his criticism. “Chelsea fans may be upset, but if Tottenham had broken the rules, I would admit it and say we don’t deserve the title. It’s impossible if some clubs play with certain advantages while others don’t. Everyone must follow the same rules and have the same opportunity to build the best team.”

He praised Antonio Conte’s coaching but insisted that sporting integrity must take priority. “If you break the rules, then you have to accept the consequences. The title should be given to another team.”

Pochettino also warned about the dangerous message sent when rule-breaking goes lightly punished. Reflecting on his departure from Spurs in 2019, he said, “We were fighting against clubs operating in a completely different way. We deserve more because we followed the rules.”

Will English Football Take a Stand?

English football authorities have typically avoided stripping titles over financial misconduct, preferring point deductions instead. With increased scrutiny on financial fair play and sustainability, cases like Chelsea’s are fueling ongoing debates about how the Premier League handles its wealthiest clubs.

While retroactive action against Chelsea seems unlikely for now, Pochettino’s statements add fuel to the conversation about fairness and enforcement in English football’s top tier.
