Why Players Embrace the Laver Cup Despite Fan Criticism, According to Patrick Mouratoglou
The ninth edition of Roger Federer's Laver Cup took place once again at London’s O2 Arena, drawing packed audiences and thrilling matches featuring top tennis talents. Even with this success, many tennis fans still dismiss the event as merely an exhibition, despite the fact that wins and losses here count towards players’ official ATP records.
Several stars, including seven-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, have expressed how much they enjoy competing at the Laver Cup regardless of its unusual spot on the calendar. Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, shed light on why players value this event so highly.
Mouratoglou Sees the Laver Cup as a Fresh Take on Tennis
On LinkedIn, Mouratoglou challenged the common notion that the Laver Cup is just an exhibition. He described it as an alternative competition that offers a modern way to present tennis, meeting both player and crowd expectations. The dynamic differs significantly from the usual tour events. Mouratoglou remarked:
“I can’t believe how many people say the players’ reactions when they win the Laver Cup are not normal. It’s not an exhibition. It’s an alternative competition.”
He went on to explain that the event creates a mix of socializing and intense competition, comparing it to going on holiday with friends but still playing matches where winning or losing feels crucial. Mouratoglou believes players appreciate a break from the repetitive cycle of the regular season, which can become mentally exhausting after years of similar tournaments and formats. The Laver Cup offers a refreshing change, helping players rediscover a different side of tennis.
Federer’s Agent Highlights Unique Team Spirit and Mentorship
Tony Godsick, co-creator of the Laver Cup and Roger Federer’s agent, shared insights into why the event draws top players. Speaking to Ubi Tennis, he said:
“Each person plays for different reasons. One of the biggest is rivals becoming teammates. There’s no other setting in tennis where players who face off 51 weeks a year get to join the same team.”
Godsick emphasized the relationships that form, as well as the mentorship from legends like Pat Rafter, Andre Agassi, Yannick Noah, Tim Henman, John McEnroe, and Bjorn Borg. He also noted the joy players feel competing in iconic arenas, such as the O2 Arena—a first for Alcaraz. For him, the event brings happiness to both himself and the sport.
