Pio Esposito Rejects Manchester United to Stay at Inter Milan
Manchester United have discovered the answer to one of their big summer questions. Pio Esposito is not coming.
The Inter Milan forward, one of Serie A’s most exciting young strikers, has decided to stay at San Siro and commit to a new contract, despite a strong push from Old Trafford.
United’s recruitment team had identified the 21-year-old Italy international as a potential long-term solution through the middle. They have tracked him closely, with scouts watching him against Luxembourg and Greece and reporting back that he “possesses the attributes to develop into a top-level centre-forward”.
Inter, though, never opened the door.
United’s search for a true No.9 hits a wall
Benjamin Sesko is locked in as the first-choice striker under Michael Carrick, but the squad behind him is still being rebuilt.
Matheus Cunha can operate as a nine. So can Joshua Zirkzee. Neither is a classic penalty-box centre-forward, and neither is viewed as the definitive answer for the role. Zirkzee, in particular, looks unlikely to remain at Old Trafford, with Juventus pushing to take the Netherlands international.
United have already turned down one opportunity in the market, rejecting a move for Liam Delap from Chelsea, according to TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey. The message was clear: if they bring in another forward, it has to be the right profile, not just another body.
That is where Esposito came in. Young. Mobile. Technically sharp. Already producing at a high level for one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Last season, he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 48 appearances across all competitions for Inter. Not just numbers for a prospect, but contributions for a player trusted in big moments.
Inter chairman and CEO Giuseppe Marotta went as far as to describe him as “something of a predestined talent for several years” in an interview with FCInter1908 back in November 2025. At a club that has seen elite forwards come and go, that kind of praise carries weight.
Inter dig in – and Esposito backs them
The interest from Manchester United was real and sustained. The response from Inter was just as firm.
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà reported that Inter “resisted every kind of attack” for Esposito, with United the most serious of his suitors. The phrase was telling: this was not a mild enquiry, it was a concerted effort to test Inter’s resolve.
There was none to be found. According to Pedullà, “no amount of money would have been enough to break down the Nerazzurri’s resistance”. Inter had already laid the groundwork for a renewal, with a base salary of around €3.5 million plus bonuses on the table, and felt no need to rush.
Crucially, Esposito’s stance matched the club’s. He has consistently given priority to Inter and made it clear he wanted to stay. As the talks edged towards completion, United’s hopes faded with them.
For a player born in 2005 and already capped by Italy, this is not just a contract extension. It is a statement that he sees his immediate future – and perhaps his prime years – in the black and blue.
What next for United?
For United, the decision forces a reset in a market that rarely waits.
They want a striker who can grow with Sesko, challenge him, cover for him and, in time, share the burden of leading the line. They do not want another hybrid forward who drifts wide or drops too deep. They want a centre-forward who lives between the posts.
Esposito fit that vision. Now he is off the table.
Inter keep their “predestined” talent. United go back to the drawing board. With the season looming and the market moving fast, how long can they afford to wait for the right No.9 to finally walk through the door?
