Peter Okidi Appointed Assistant Coach at KCB for Premier League Title Chase
Peter Okidi is back in the FKF Premier League – and this time he joins one of the division’s most ambitious projects.
KCB confirmed on Friday, 31 July, that the former Shabana head coach has been appointed assistant coach, stepping in as the new deputy to seasoned tactician Robert Matano for at least the 2026–2027 campaign.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Okidi as the club's assistant coach who will deputize head coach Robert Matano ahead of the new season,” the club announced, hailing “a wealth of coaching experience” built across Kenyan football.
It is a significant move for Okidi, whose last two jobs have been short, sharp stints. He parted ways with Shabana by mutual consent in March, then took over at National Super League side Mombasa United, replacing the axed Gilbert Selebwa for a brief spell.
Now he walks into a dugout with heavier expectations and a clearer target.
From journeyman head coach to key lieutenant
Okidi’s coaching path has rarely been straight. He first came to wider prominence with Nakuru All Stars in 2013, later taking charge of Nakuru Bucks and earning a role with the Kenya U15 boys’ team. Those posts built a reputation for developing young players and steadying unstable dressing rooms.
At KCB, he trades the solitary pressure of head coaching for the sharp edge of a title chase alongside one of the country’s most experienced managers. Matano’s presence sets the tone; Okidi’s task is to complement it.
Bankers load up for a title charge
KCB have made no secret of their ambition: they want a maiden Premier League crown. Their off-season has reflected that urgency with a series of targeted technical bench reinforcements.
Alongside Okidi, the club has brought in former Gor Mahia goalkeeper trainer Boniface Oluoch as the new goalkeeper coach, adding a familiar and respected figure between the posts. The club has also moved to sharpen its backroom intelligence, appointing Tobby Owino as Video Analyst to strengthen performance and analysis work.
Taken together, these are not the moves of a side content with mid-table safety. They are the moves of a club preparing for a long, hard title push.
Okidi steps into that environment with a growing résumé and something to prove. The question now is simple: can this rebuilt bench finally turn KCB’s promise into a first Premier League crown?
