PCB Picks Sahibzada Farhan as New Pakistan T20I Captain, Replacing Salman Ali Agha
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to replace Salman Ali Agha as the captain of the national T20I side. The board is putting its trust in Sahibzada Farhan, who is expected to lead Pakistan not only through the upcoming series against Sri Lanka but also into the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle.
Long-Term Vision for Pakistan's T20 Team
Unlike past strategies that often involved quick captaincy changes, the PCB seems focused on building a stable core team over several years. According to reports from Geo TV, the plan is to allow a consistent group of players to grow together, giving the captain an extended period to develop leadership skills rather than rotating captains frequently.
Sahibzada Farhan was already named captain for Pakistan’s Asian Games campaign, which now appears to be a stepping stone toward a permanent role. He will continue as captain for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka scheduled at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 9, 11, and 13. This series will serve as an early test of how well he manages the team over a sustained period.
Captaincy Change Driven by Performance Issues
Salman Ali Agha’s recent dip in form has been a key factor behind the leadership change. Despite holding the captaincy for some time, his struggles with consistency have led the management to seek a fresh approach. Alongside this change, the squad is expected to undergo adjustments. For example, Fakhar Zaman is likely to return, offering experience at the top of the order, whereas senior pacers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf might remain sidelined during this rebuilding phase.
Focus on Youth and Depth for 2028
The PCB is clearly aiming to nurture young talent and create squad depth leading up to the 2028 T20 World Cup. This approach signals a shift away from short-term fixes toward long-term development.
Farhan said while speaking in Japan, "If I am given the permanent captaincy, I will definitely accept it. But right now, my only focus is on the Asian Games and my responsibilities as captain of this team."
Patience Marks a New Chapter for Pakistan Cricket
Pakistan cricket has frequently changed captains when results faltered, but this new move stands out by giving Farhan a genuine multi-year opportunity. It marks a rare show of patience from the board, emphasizing stability over reactive decisions.
Salman’s removal isn’t about a single poor series but about recognizing that consistent leadership can lead to better outcomes. Teams like England and India have proven that trusting a white-ball captain over time helps build a strong foundation, even through tough periods.
Still, judging Farhan primarily on his Asian Games performance might be premature. If the PCB is truly committed to a long-term plan, it should let him lead through the Sri Lanka series and beyond before making a final assessment.
