Patrice Evra knows exactly what it takes to survive – and shine – in the Premier League. Which is why his latest advice to a fellow Frenchman comes with real weight: if Manu Koné wants the perfect English launchpad, he should head for north London.
The former Manchester United defender, a legend at Old Trafford, has thrown his support behind a potential move that would once have raised eyebrows – a Red Devils icon urging a compatriot to join Arsenal. For Evra, though, the fit is too obvious to ignore.
“I like Manu Kone's profile for the Premier League. He has energy, he carries the ball, he likes duels and he works for the team,” he told Stake, laying out the midfielder’s toolkit in blunt, approving terms.
This is the kind of profile English football devours. A midfielder who doesn’t just sit and pass but drives, bites into tackles, and runs himself into the ground for the collective. Evra’s warning, however, comes with a note of realism about the step up.
“All of those things matter in England. The Premier League is faster. You don't get time to breathe. So the important thing is adaptation. Don't judge him after five games,” he said.
That last line cuts to the heart of it. The Premier League does not wait. Players are written off in weeks, not seasons. Evra’s message is clear: Koné has the tools, but patience will decide whether those tools become weapons.
“If he goes to Arsenal with a manager who knows how to use him, I think he can do well. He definitely has the tools. Then it is about consistency.”
For all that praise, Koné is not at the top of Arsenal’s current shopping list.
Arteta’s gaze, and Arsenal’s financial focus, are locked on another midfielder already proven in English football: Bruno Guimarães. The Newcastle United man has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions, and his potential arrival has drawn heavyweight approval of its own.
Claude Makélélé, one of the greatest holding midfielders of his generation and a Chelsea legend, believes Guimarães and Arsenal are built for each other. Speaking to ComeOn, he underlined exactly why the Brazilian’s ambition and Arsenal’s project intersect so neatly.
“Bruno Guimaraes is an ambitious player who sees his career one way: Champions League football, always, and teams built to win titles in Europe,” Makélélé said.
Arsenal, in his eyes, match that vision.
“Arsenal tick every box. They won the Premier League, they've gone deep in the Champions League, and they're built to go again. It's always right for a good player to join a great team, and Arsenal have done great business.”
Makélélé’s assessment of Guimarães leaves no room for doubt about the calibre of player on the table.
“Bruno Guimaraes is a very good player, exceptional, as we saw with Brazil. It's his career and his decision, but his game fits Arsenal perfectly.”
Two great midfielders of the past, from rival eras and rival clubs, pointing towards the same destination for two very different talents. One, Koné, still on the outside of the Premier League looking in. The other, Guimarães, already one of its standout operators.
