Orel Mangala Joins Getafe on Loan from Lyon

Getafe have moved decisively in the final stretch of the window, bringing in Belgium international Orel Mangala on loan from Lyon for the season.

The deal, confirmed by both clubs, offers a fresh start for a midfielder whose time in France never really caught fire. Mangala arrived at Lyon from Nottingham Forest in 2024 on a four-year contract, billed as a powerful, modern No. 8 who could drive a new era in midfield. Instead, his spell has been defined by frustration, with a serious ACL injury suffered while on loan at Everton last year halting his momentum at the worst possible time.

Lyon, reeling from a 3rd qualifying round first-leg defeat to Sparta Prague in the Champions League and under pressure to trim both squad size and wage bill, have chosen to act. Mangala is one of several high earners they need to move on, and Getafe will cover part of his salary as part of the agreement. The Belgian remains tied to Lyon until 2028, so this is a reset, not a farewell.

For Getafe, it is a calculated gamble with clear upside. If Mangala rediscovers the physical edge and composure on the ball that took him from the Premier League to the international stage, they gain a seasoned, top-level midfielder without a long-term financial commitment.
