Omar Artan to Officiate 2026 UEFA Super Cup After World Cup Visa Denial

Somali referee Omar Artan will oversee the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa following his unexpected exclusion from the 2026 World Cup due to visa issues.

First Non-European to Lead UEFA Super Cup

At 34 years old, Artan is set to make history as the first non-European referee in charge of the UEFA Super Cup. He previously made waves by becoming the first Somali official to referee the CAF Champions League final and was awarded the African federation's men's referee of the year in 2025.

Denied Entry to the United States for the World Cup

Although selected to referee at the 2026 World Cup, Artan was prevented from entering the United States, where FIFA stationed its officials. Arriving in Miami on June 8, he faced extensive screening despite having a valid visa and all proper documentation. U.S. authorities deemed him inadmissible because of "vetting concerns," linked to Somalia’s inclusion on a travel ban list initiated under former President Donald Trump's administration.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed: "FIFA can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States." The organization clarified it does not handle immigration or visa decisions, which remain under host country jurisdiction.

UEFA Responds with Super Cup Appointment

Shortly after the visa denial, UEFA announced Artan as the referee for the Super Cup, reflecting cooperation efforts between UEFA and CAF signed earlier in the year. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the gesture as a sign of respect for Artan's skills and dedication, also thanking CAF president Patrice Motsepe for supporting the collaboration.

"Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination," Ceferin said.

In an interview with UEFA.com, Artan expressed gratitude for the global support he has received. He described how missing out on the World Cup was a tough blow but that being chosen for the Super Cup was a joyful moment for him and his family. He mentioned the strong Somali community in Europe and Austria celebrating his appointment.

"There’s a big Somali community in Europe and in Austria, and they are over the moon with me officiating a match like this. I have worked very hard to be here and I’m really proud," Artan shared. "As you can imagine, I grew up in a difficult situation, but it didn’t prevent me from pursuing my dreams."
