Nottingham Forest Sign Ousmane Diomande for £34.2m
Nottingham Forest have underlined their ambition with the signing of highly rated Côte d’Ivoire defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting, in a deal reported to be worth £34.2m.
The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option for an extra year. It is the kind of commitment that signals a long-term project rather than a speculative punt.
Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, did not hide his excitement. “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest,” he said, framing Diomande not as a prospect, but as a ready-made pillar for the back line.
Diomande’s route to the Premier League has not been a straight sprint through the traditional powerhouses. He started his professional career in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, learning his trade in a league that demands physical resilience and tactical discipline. From there, his rise accelerated.
After joining Sporting in January 2023, he made 132 appearances for the Portuguese club in all competitions, an enormous workload for a player in his early 20s and a measure of the trust placed in him. He became central to Sporting’s defensive structure, and his profile grew on the European stage.
He started both legs of Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal last season, holding his own against Premier League opposition in a tie that tested his composure and positional sense. On the international front, he played the full 90 minutes in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup group win over Curaçao, further sharpening his big-game credentials.
For Forest, still intent on consolidating their status in the top flight while edging towards something more ambitious, this is the sort of signing that changes the tone of a summer window. Diomande arrives not as a gamble, but as a defender with deep minutes at elite level and the kind of ceiling clubs usually try to lock down early.
Fulham break new ground with Shea Charles
Across the capital, Fulham have made their own statement, bringing in Shea Charles from Southampton for a reported £30m fee – a figure that would make the 22-year-old the most expensive Northern Ireland international in history.
Charles has signed a five-year contract at Craven Cottage, with Fulham holding an option to extend by another 12 months. That length of deal reflects how central they expect him to become in Alvaro Arbeloa’s plans.
“It’s a great club, with a really good vision – the manager [Alvaro Arbeloa] explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege,” Charles said. “I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it’s perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.”
The move gives Charles a platform back in the top division after his time at Southampton, and hands Fulham a versatile midfielder entering his prime years, with the club clearly betting on his development curve matching the scale of the investment.
Jorgensen heads to Strasbourg for game time
Filip Jorgensen, meanwhile, will seek regular football in France after joining Strasbourg on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2024 from Villarreal and has already built a respectable body of work, making 36 appearances for the Blues. He started all but one of Chelsea’s games in the Conference League last season and featured 12 times in all competitions, a solid introduction but not yet the volume of minutes a goalkeeper of his age craves.
Strasbourg, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, offer him exactly that: a prominent role in a competitive league and the chance to sharpen his command of a back line over a full campaign. For Chelsea, it is a strategic loan; for Jorgensen, it could be the season that decides whether he returns to London as a genuine contender for the No 1 shirt.
