Northampton Town Sign Striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester City

Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester City on a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian has committed to a three-year contract at Sixfields, a clear signal that the Cobblers see him as a central piece of their forward line rather than a short-term gamble.

Opoku’s route to Northampton has been anything but conventional. He arrived at Leicester in 2023 from Syracuse University in the United States, swapping college soccer for the demands of the English game. Leicester immediately sent him to their Belgian sister club OH Leuven, where he found the net five times and began to adjust to European football.

His education continued last season in League Two with Newport County. There, Opoku scored six goals in 30 league appearances and finished as the Exiles’ top scorer, a modest but telling return in a side that often had to grind for every chance.

Chris Hogg's Perspective

Cobblers boss Chris Hogg believes that unusual path is exactly what makes the forward ready for the next step.

“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website. “He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level.”

Northampton have been tracking Opoku for some time, and Hogg made it clear this is a carefully considered move rather than a late-window punt.

“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player,” he said.

Now the onus shifts to Opoku. From Syracuse to Leuven to Newport, he has kept climbing. Sixfields is the next test of whether that rise can continue in Cobblers colours.
