Nicolo Tresoldi Postpones Decision on International Allegiance Until After 2027 U21 Euros
Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi has decided to delay his choice between representing Germany or Italy at the senior international level until after the 2027 U21 European Championship. The 22-year-old striker, currently excelling with the German U21 side, remains torn between his country of birth and the nation where he developed as a footballer.
A Divided Heart
The battle for Tresoldi’s commitment continues, as he intends to maintain his role with the German U21s through the next year’s European Championship before making a final decision. Both the German Football Association (DFB) and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have shown strong interest in securing his talents.
In an interview with Sky Germany, Tresoldi shared the emotional challenge he faces, admitting his feelings are split evenly between the two countries. "My heart is 50:50. Both nations mean a lot to me," he explained.
Talks With Jurgen Klopp
The stakes rose when Jurgen Klopp, Germany’s national team coach, personally reached out to Tresoldi. Klopp, impressed by the player’s performances in the Champions League, has had in-depth conversations with him about his future.
"We had good conversations. I explained my situation to Kloppo, and he understood it. He is a great person. It wasn’t a coach-player conversation, but like a father-son conversation. He said that the door is always open for me," Tresoldi revealed.
Roberto Mancini’s Efforts for Italy
The Italian camp is equally eager. Italy’s head coach Roberto Mancini has also approached Tresoldi, seeking to persuade him to represent Italy. Tresoldi responded to Mancini with the same honesty he gave to Klopp.
Born in Sardinia, Tresoldi spent his early years in Italy before moving to Germany at 13. His ties to Italy run deep, extending beyond his father’s heritage to include his upbringing. He also holds eligibility for Argentina through his mother, though the current focus is between Germany and Italy.
"It’s not just that only my father comes from Italy. I was also born there, I grew up there," Tresoldi stated.
Commitment to Germany U21 for Now
For the time being, Tresoldi remains dedicated to the German U21 project led by coach Antonio Di Salvo. He looks forward to continuing to represent Germany at the youth level, setting a timeline to decide after the 2027 U21 European Championship.
He is scheduled to play this Saturday as Germany U21 face Latvia U21 in a critical European Championship qualifier. His participation is a key boost for the squad.
"I wear the Germany jersey with pride, I’m very happy to be here. I still want to play in the European Championship here. After that, we will see how things progress," Tresoldi said.
