Neymar Criticizes Negative Santos Fans After Comeback Win Over Macara
Neymar expressed frustration towards some Santos supporters who booed him during the Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 first-leg match against CSD Macara at Vila Belmiro. Despite helping his team to a 2-1 comeback win with two assists, the Brazilian forward urged those fans with a negative mindset to simply stay away from matches.
Santos' Tough Comeback Against Macara
The game started poorly for Santos as Macara's Franco Posse scored inside the first four minutes, unsettling the home crowd. Neymar then took charge, assisting Gabriel Barbosa's equalizer just before half-time. Later, he provided another assist from a corner that William Arao converted in the 75th minute, securing the lead and eventual victory for Santos.
Neymar Responds to Critical Supporters
Following a misplaced pass during the match, some home fans jeered Neymar, leading to an emotional response from the player. Talking to ESPN after the match, Neymar said:
"We were down 1-0, and I know the fans have suffered for many years... but if you're going to come to the stadium with a negative attitude, it's better to stay home. I told the guy in the stands: instead of criticizing, there's still 60 minutes left; support us and encourage us. Then we turn the game around, I come over to get water, and he's making a heart sign in the stands... It's easy to be a Santos fan like that, only liking the player when he's winning."
Neymar's Impact and Team Challenges
Neymar's performance remains a key factor for Santos, having now tallied 13 goals and eight assists in his last 24 games. The match also saw some disappointment for teammate Gabigol, whose two goals were disallowed for offside. Additionally, Macara's goalkeeper Rodrigo Rodriguez made a crucial save late in stoppage time to deny Neymar’s free kick attempt. The narrow victory provides Santos a valuable edge ahead of the second leg.
Upcoming Away Test in Ecuador
Santos will travel to Ambato next week for the return leg against Macara. A draw there would be enough for Santos to advance to the quarter-finals. Playing at high altitude is expected to challenge Santos physically as they aim to protect their aggregate lead. Neymar’s fitness and form will be crucial for the club’s quest to capture the 2026 Copa Sudamericana title.
