Newcastle United Pursue Leanne Kiernan from Liverpool
Newcastle United are in advanced talks to prise Republic of Ireland forward Leanne Kiernan from Liverpool in what would be one of the statement deals of the Championship summer.
Kiernan, 27, still has more than a year left on her Liverpool contract, so Newcastle are expected to pay a fee to get it done. For a second-tier club, that is a clear sign of intent.
This is not a gamble on potential. It is a move for a proven finisher.
Proven pedigree, limited minutes
Kiernan has spent five years at Liverpool, signing an extension in 2025 and helping drive the club back to the top flight. She scored 23 goals in 76 appearances for the Reds, and when Liverpool won the WSL 2 title in 2022, she stood at the heart of it, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 14 goals.
Before Anfield, she cut her teeth at West Ham, making more than 40 WSL appearances after emerging at Shelbourne. For the Republic of Ireland, she has 38 caps since her debut in 2017, a regular feature in senior international squads across almost a decade.
The pedigree is there. The problem at Liverpool has been opportunity.
Under Gareth Taylor, Kiernan’s minutes have shrunk. She started just once in the WSL last season before heading out on loan to Nottingham Forest in January for the second half of the campaign. While she chased rhythm and game time in the Championship, Liverpool reshaped their forward line.
Germany international Vivien Endemann arrived from Wolfsburg this summer, adding more competition in the attacking positions and pushing Kiernan further down the pecking order.
For a forward in her prime, that is a clear crossroads.
Newcastle’s intent in the market
Newcastle have sensed the opening.
The club have already had a busy window, bringing in six new faces as they gear up for a serious tilt at the WSL 2 title. Kiernan would add something different: a forward with top-flight experience, international know-how and a history of delivering in promotion campaigns.
She knows this division. She has dominated it before.
For Newcastle, who are building a squad designed not just to escape the second tier but to stay up when they get out of it, a player like Kiernan offers more than just goals. She brings standards from Liverpool’s dressing room, familiarity with the demands of the WSL, and the kind of movement and work rate that can drag a team through tight games.
The move also underlines Newcastle’s growing pull. Convincing a long-serving Liverpool player under contract, one who has been central to a title-winning side, to drop into the second tier sends a message to the rest of the league.
