Gary Neville Praises Mikel Arteta’s Bold Half-Time Substitution in Arsenal’s Win Over Aston Villa
Mikel Arteta made a tough call by substituting Christos Tzolis at half-time during Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win over Aston Villa. The £34 million signing had a difficult first half and was replaced by Eberechi Eze, a decision that earned praise from football pundit Gary Neville.
Tzolis Faces Tough Challenge
The winger, who joined from Club Brugge, started the season well with two assists against Manchester City in the Community Shield and an impressive performance against Coventry City. But Villa Park proved a different challenge. Tzolis struggled to make an impact, and his efforts were hindered by the aggressive marking of Villa defender Matty Cash. He also picked up a yellow card after fouling John McGinn in the 37th minute.
Neville Supports the Decision to Replace Tzolis
On Sky Sports, Gary Neville said he understood why Arteta decided to take Tzolis off early. He pointed out how Cash’s strong defensive play limited the Greek winger's influence on the game.
“I’m not surprised he’s coming off and not just because of the yellow card. He really was struggling on this side. Matty Cash was really aggressive against him,” Neville explained.
Saka’s Goal Secures Vital Three Points
After Tzolis’ substitution, Arsenal pushed harder for a breakthrough. Around the 60-minute mark, Riccardo Calafiori found space down the flank and delivered a precise pass to Bukayo Saka, who calmly finished amidst a crowded penalty area. Neville praised Arsenal’s patient buildup and Saka’s perfect positioning.
“It’s a brilliant goal, it really is. Arsenal are so patient, so trusting of their defence that they don’t need to rush. Calafiori does exceptionally well. He just opens up his body and makes that little dart in behind, then puts it on a plate. The run down the side of Aston Villa’s centre-backs is something we haven’t seen enough of. Saka is in the dream position, it’s where you want your opposite winger. It’s a brilliant celebration in front of those Arsenal fans,” Neville said.
Arsenal Maintain Perfect Start to Premier League Season
This win keeps Arsenal’s flawless record intact after two rounds in the Premier League. They share the top spot with Manchester City, Chelsea, and newly promoted Hull City as the title defense looks promising under Arteta’s guidance.
