Netherlands Edge Serbia 2-1 in Nations League Thanks to Zirkzee and Koopmeiners
The Netherlands kept their unbeaten streak alive in the UEFA Nations League with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Serbia at Eindhoven. Goals from Teun Koopmeiners and Joshua Zirkzee ensured victory after Serbia's Mihajlo Cvetkovic had equalized early in the game.
In a match where possession was largely dominated by the Dutch, holding 65%, they faced a tough challenge from Serbia's direct approach. Koopmeiners gave the Oranje the lead in the 31st minute with a well-timed finish, only for Cvetkovic to respond quickly by converting a cross from Aleksa Terzic four minutes later. The game remained tight until the second half.
The turning point came with the introduction of Joshua Zirkzee after halftime. His presence added a focal point the Dutch attack lacked initially, and he scored the winner in the 72nd minute, finishing off a pass from Tijjani Reijnders. Despite Serbia launching 15 shots in search of an equalizer late on, the Dutch defense held firm to move to eight points alongside Greece atop Group 2 in Nations League A.
Goalkeeper & Defence
- Bart Verbruggen - 7/10: Solid between the posts, making four key saves. Could not prevent the goal from a swift Serbian counter but helped build play with good distribution.
- Virgil van Dijk - 8/10: On his 100th cap, he was calm and commanding. Led the backline expertly and kept the defense compact throughout the match.
- Denzel Dumfries - 6/10: Provided width and energy on the right flank though lacked his usual precise crosses. Important recovery runs prevented Serbian breaks.
- Micky van de Ven - 7/10: Used his pace effectively to cover the high defensive line, intercepted several times, and contributed well when stepping into midfield.
Midfield
- Teun Koopmeiners - 8/10: Showed excellent timing to score the opener and linked defense to attack smoothly, driving Dutch control in the first half.
- Tijjani Reijnders - 8/10: The creative spark who supplied the assist for the winning goal. His vertical passes and work rate stood out.
- Ryan Gravenberch - 6/10: Maintained possession and rhythm but was substituted before the hour as the coach sought more directness upfront.
- Joey Veerman - 6/10: Maintained tidy possession but struggled to break through Serbia’s dense midfield, replaced in the 59th minute.
Attack
- Noa Lang - 5/10: Found it difficult to make an impact on the wing, often isolated and unable to test the goalkeeper before being subbed off.
- Mexx Meerdink - 5/10: Struggled as the target man with limited involvement inside the box and replaced at halftime for a more physical presence.
- Crysencio Summerville - 6/10: Showed glimpses of skill and speed but lacked consistency in decision-making. Still kept Serbian defenders busy until the end.
Substitutes & Manager
- Joshua Zirkzee - 9/10: The key figure who transformed the Dutch attack after coming on at halftime. Scored the decisive goal with confidence and excellent movement.
- Ruben van Bommel - 6/10: Replaced Lang and brought fresh energy and width to stretch Serbia’s defense late in the game.
- Jorrel Hato - 6/10: Came on to reinforce the left side of defense and helped secure the lead in the final stages.
- Gjivai Zechiel - 6/10: Added discipline and energy to midfield, effectively disrupting Serbian attempts late on.
- Quinten Timber - N/A: Entered in the 82nd minute to help see out the match.
- Xavi Hernandez - 8/10: Made smart tactical decisions including the halftime introduction of Zirkzee and a triple substitution to regain control when the game threatened to slip away.
