The Nottingham Forest full-back, forged in Liverpool’s academy and once seen as part of their future, is understood to be keen on a move to Manchester United this summer – and specifically on the chance to work under Michael Carrick. For a player with Anfield in his bloodstream, that is no small decision.

BBC Sport revealed on July 9 that Manchester United had registered their interest in Williams, opening the door to what would be one of the more intriguing defensive moves of the window. Talks between Williams and Forest over a new contract are ongoing, with the club confident they can convince him to stay, but the landscape is shifting.
TEAMtalk now report that Williams is ready to join United in this window, with sources close to the player indicating that Old Trafford holds a particular appeal despite his long-standing Liverpool ties. At 25, with Premier League experience on both flanks, he sees this as the moment to test himself at a higher level. Manchester United, in his mind, sit at the top of that list.
No formal bid has landed on Forest’s desk yet. That hasn’t stopped the noise from growing.
A full-back in demand
United are not alone. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed interest in the Wales international, who has spent the past two seasons largely at left-back for Forest but remains equally comfortable on the right.
That versatility is exactly the kind of profile top clubs crave. Williams has developed into a relentless outlet down the flank, capable of driving play, defending aggressively and slotting into different systems. For a United side being reshaped under INEOS, he fits the mould of a modern, high-energy full-back.
TEAMtalk’s report underlines that Williams is “open to testing himself at a bigger club, particularly Manchester United.” The intent is clear. The move, at least from his side, is very much on.
Forest, though, are not bystanders in this. Williams is under contract at the City Ground until 2029, putting the club in a strong negotiating position and giving them every right to demand a substantial fee. They are already working on a new deal with an improved salary, a sign of how central he has become to their plans.
United’s rebuild gathers pace
If United do push ahead, Williams would join a recruitment drive that has already gathered momentum. The club have brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a £50million deal and activated the £35million release clause in Youri Tielemans’s contract at Aston Villa.

That clause now looms large. Any sizeable fee Forest extract for Williams will send a cut back to Anfield. A Liverpool academy graduate, potentially joining Manchester United, in a move that financially benefits Liverpool. The rivalry has thrown up some strange twists over the years; this would be another.
For Forest, the calculation is brutal but simple. Keep a key full-back, already locked into a long-term contract, and build around him. Or cash in at a peak moment, bank a major fee, accept that a slice will head to Liverpool, and trust their recruitment to find the next one.
