Myles Lewis-Skelly: Arsenal's Rising Star Open to United Move
Arsenal’s £75million move for Bruno Guimaraes has done more than reshape their midfield. It has cracked the door open for one of their brightest academy products to walk away – and Manchester United are being actively invited to step through it.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, long admired at Old Trafford, has been offered to United as Arsenal reassess his pathway in a now more congested engine room. The 19-year-old, who can operate both in midfield and at left-back, suddenly looks less central to Mikel Arteta’s plans with Guimaraes arriving from Newcastle United to command major minutes.
Arsenal’s stance is clear: they are open to a sale. That position, first outlined by football.london, has also been relayed to Chelsea, who have likewise been given the chance to move for the England youth international. Both clubs rate him. Neither has yet committed.
It is a sharp turn from a year ago. Lewis-Skelly signed a new five-year deal in June 2025, a statement contract that seemed to lock in his future at the Emirates. His involvement in key games late last season, after months of limited action, suggested a player being carefully groomed rather than quietly eased out.
Now the landscape has shifted.
United’s perfect fit?
Michael Carrick wants two more pieces before the window shuts: another midfielder and a new left-back. Lewis-Skelly ticks both boxes. For a manager who values flexibility and control, a teenager comfortable stepping into midfield or pulling wide on the left is close to the ideal profile.
United have already moved decisively in that area of the pitch this summer. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have come in to reinforce central midfield, and a third addition is being chased to complete the rebuild. At left-back, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall was the primary target, but he is not available for transfer. That has forced United to scan the market again – and pushed Lewis-Skelly higher up their list.
The club’s recruitment department know the Arsenal academy well. Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi have already made the journey north from London to Manchester. Lewis-Skelly could be the third to follow that path in a short span, another highly rated Hale End graduate tempted by a clearer route to senior football elsewhere.
There is also the Xabi Alonso factor. While Lewis-Skelly would remain a midfielder at Old Trafford, the expectation is that under Alonso he would see more regular action in his preferred role than he is currently being offered at Arsenal. That promise of minutes, not just money, could prove decisive.
Rashford, swaps and shifting priorities
The possibility of a more ambitious move has not gone away either. With Arsenal in the market for a left winger and Marcus Rashford’s long-term future still not entirely settled, a swap deal has been floated as a scenario that might suit all sides.
Rashford has returned to Carrington and linked up with the squad for the final leg of their pre-season tour in Dublin, a development that nudges the likelihood towards him staying at Old Trafford. Even so, an exit cannot be completely ruled out. If Arsenal push harder for a wide forward and United decide the time is right to cash in, Lewis-Skelly could yet become a key piece in a much larger puzzle.
For now, though, United’s focus sits at left-back. Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander has emerged as an alternative to Hall. The Spaniard would prefer to remain in his home country, but United hold a crucial advantage over Barcelona: they are willing to meet his asking price. That financial readiness keeps them firmly in the race.
Chelsea lurking, pressure building
Chelsea, too, are watching closely. From their side, the belief is straightforward: if they table a lucrative proposal, Arsenal will find it hard to refuse. The same logic applies to United. A sizeable bid from either of the Premier League heavyweights could force Arsenal’s hand.
Chelsea have already spent heavily this summer, bringing in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Another major outlay on a Premier League talent such as Lewis-Skelly would not just be about strengthening their own squad. It could also smooth the way for Enzo Fernandez to move on, with Real Madrid and Manchester City both monitoring his situation.
So the stage is set.
Arsenal have upgraded their midfield and opened a door. United need a versatile midfielder-left-back hybrid and know this player inside out. Chelsea have the money and a growing reputation for snapping up elite young talent.
