Mourinho’s Madrid Faces Espanyol in La Liga Opener

Real Madrid start their new La Liga season on Saturday night in a setting that feels anything but gentle: the RCDE Stadium, against an Espanyol side already flying.

It is not just another opener. It is Jose Mourinho’s first official match back in charge of the club, the beginning of a second era that will be judged from the very first whistle.

Espanyol Arrive With a Spring in Their Step

Espanyol could hardly have asked for a better tune‑up. A 3-0 demolition of Levante on the opening weekend has filled the dressing room with belief and sharpened their edge for Madrid’s visit.

They do have problems of their own. Cabrera is suspended, while Javi Puado and Kike Garcia are both out injured. Even so, that early statement win means they will not be welcoming Madrid as underdogs content to sit back. They will fancy a swing.

Madrid Hit by Absences

Mourinho, by contrast, walks into his first league game with a medical report that reads like a warning.

Real Madrid are stripped of a full unit: Ferland Mendy, Marco Asensio, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni, Thiago Pitarch, Rodrygo and Endrick are all unavailable with physical problems, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

The injuries have forced a dip into the academy. Mario Rivas, Cestero and Alexis Ceria have been promoted to bolster a stretched squad, a reminder that even a superclub can look thin when the treatment room is full.

Star Power Amid the Scratches

Despite the absentees, the starting XI that Marca expect Mourinho to send out is anything but modest:

Courtois; Arnold, Konate, Huijsen, Carreras; Valverde, Bernardo Silva, Brahim Diaz; Arda Guler, Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe.

It is a line-up built to dominate the ball and punish on the break, mixing established stars with emerging talent. Mbappe and Vinicius up front promise chaos for any back line; behind them, Bernardo Silva and Brahim Diaz offer the craft to unlock a deep block, while Arda Guler adds the unpredictable touch Mourinho has so often harnessed in his best teams.

The question is not whether Madrid have quality. It is how quickly Mourinho can weld it into something ruthless.

Title Demands, Different Targets

The stakes are clear. Madrid surrendered the league to Barcelona in each of the last two seasons. Inside the club, that is already one season too many. The demand is simple: get the title back.

For Espanyol, the target is more modest but no less urgent. Build on that blistering start. Turn a strong opening day into a strong opening month. Take something—anything—off one of the favourites and send a message that the RCDE will not be an easy stop for anyone.

Mourinho’s return, Espanyol’s momentum, Madrid’s injuries, Mbappe’s league bow in white, a stadium that senses an opportunity. For a first step in a long title race, this feels a lot like a test.
