Motherwell Set to Finish Job Against HB Torshavn

Cillian Sheridan has seen enough European ties to know when a team holds the cards. After Motherwell’s composed 2-0 win over HB Torshavn at Fir Park, the former Steelmen striker is convinced this one should be wrapped up long before any nerves creep in.

It was Alfred Johansson’s first competitive game in charge, but his players made it look like a routine European night. Martin Moormann struck, Lukas Fadinger followed, and Motherwell walked off with a two-goal cushion that felt as important psychologically as it did on the scoreboard.

HB, sitting fifth in the Faroese top flight after 16 games, arrived in Lanarkshire as a side still trying to rediscover last season’s edge, when a second-place finish earned them this Conference League shot. They left having been kept at arm’s length.

Motherwell's Strategy

For Sheridan, speaking on the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast, the equation is simple.

He believes Motherwell should not just protect the lead in the Faroe Islands – they should impose themselves.

He pointed to the context. This is not the Faroese champions. This is the team that finished in the European spots, now mid-pack in their domestic league, trying to punch above their weight on the continental stage.

That matters over two legs. So does experience, game management, and the authority Motherwell showed in the first meeting.

Sheridan is not hiding behind caveats or safety nets. He is prepared to be reminded of his words if it all goes wrong, but he does not expect to be.

He framed it bluntly: you do not travel to the Faroe Islands with a two-goal advantage and let it slip at this level of European competition.

The Challenge Ahead

The challenge now is straightforward. Motherwell must turn a strong first act into a complete performance, finish off HB, and stride into the third round of Conference League qualifying as if this was always the plan.
