Mikel Arteta's Arsenal Debut Against Girona: What to Expect

Mikel Arteta stands on the brink of his first public look at Arsenal this summer, and it should come with a debut.

After Saturday’s low-key workout against MK Dons behind closed doors, tonight’s meeting with Girona is the curtain-raiser supporters have been waiting for: a first chance to see how the manager intends to shape his side after a bruising end to last season. The expectation is clear — a new face should be thrown straight into the mix.

Several of Arteta’s most trusted lieutenants are nowhere near the pitch. Those who went the distance at the World Cup with Spain and England remain on holiday, their bodies and minds still being pieced back together after a long year. William Saliba is not just absent, he is out for what the club describe as an “extended period” with a back injury, a shadow that hangs over Arsenal’s defensive plans.

Martin Odegaard is also missing from the early pre-season picture. The captain’s run to the quarter-finals with Norway has delayed his return and left him playing catch-up in the fitness race. Arsenal’s creative heartbeat will have to wait.

One player is not waiting. Kai Havertz has been working alone at Bayer Leverkusen’s training facilities, pushing himself through individual sessions last week to be ready for this moment. That extra work could pay off immediately, with the German forward in line to come straight into the side against Girona. Arteta has rarely shied away from trusting a prepared player, even if the calendar still says July.

There is movement elsewhere in the squad, but not everyone is ready to be unleashed. Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are due to link up with the group ahead of the game, yet their involvement is expected to be limited at best. A handful of training sessions is rarely enough for Arteta’s demanding system, and both Brazilians are more likely to watch than to dominate.

Ben White, though, is edging towards a more meaningful step. The right-back has not played a minute since the knee injury that cut short his campaign last season. He sat out the MK Dons friendly, but has been back on the grass for the past couple of weeks and is closing in on a return. Girona could offer him a first, carefully managed run-out — a small but important checkpoint in his recovery.

Not everyone is that close. Jurrien Timber, who underwent minor groin surgery over the summer, still needs more time before he can rejoin the action. Arsenal will not rush him; the memory of last season’s injury problems is still too fresh.

Those gaps create opportunity. Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri, two of the brightest prospects in the club’s academy, will both be hoping this is the night they are trusted with more than a token appearance. A sharp touch here, a brave run there — pre-season can change a manager’s mind quicker than any training drill.

Cristhian Mosquera may feel that more than most. With Saliba sidelined, the centre-back is set for another chance to show he can step into the void. Arteta needs someone to steady the defence while his leader recovers. Girona, in front of watching fans rather than training-ground staff, is a very different stage.

It is only pre-season on the calendar. For those chasing a place in Arteta’s plans, it already feels like something more.
