Middlesbrough’s summer rebuild just found its headline act between the posts.

Boro’s decision to move so heavily for a goalkeeper stems from last season’s internal assessment. Sol Brynn was handed the chance to step up as number one and did plenty right, but the club wanted to raise the ceiling of the entire department.
The plan now is sharp. Brynn stays, fights, and grows. The competition is meant to sharpen him, not sideline him. But the reality is blunt: after such a sizeable investment, the starting shirt belongs to Vitek until he gives someone a reason to take it off him.

The club are also monitoring the market for a winger or wide forward, and a midfielder could follow depending on outgoings. The squad is being built with options, not excuses.
