Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Last 32 with Victory Over South Korea

Mexico Leads the Way into World Cup Knockout Stage

Mexico kept their perfect run alive at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the first team to secure a place in the last 32 after edging past South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara.

The match’s sole goal arrived in the 50th minute when midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on a mistake. South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu mishandled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk, allowing Romo to tap into an open net.

South Korea Threatens but Falls Short

South Korea’s closest opportunity came late in the game. In the 87th minute, Cho Gue-sung headed a close-range chance that was brilliantly saved by Mexico’s keeper Raul Rangel. Rangel also stopped a follow-up shot from Yang Hyun-jun.

Earlier, captain Son Heung-min chipped Rangel, only for his effort to be cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez. Son’s attempt was ultimately ruled offside.

Fueled by lively home support, who expressed frustration during halftime after a quiet first half, Mexico nearly doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Raul Jimenez fired from a tight angle but was denied by the goalkeeper. Substitute Obed Vargas also tested Kim with a powerful strike later on.

Group A Leaders and What's Next

With this victory, Mexico remains unbeaten and tops Group A, guaranteeing progression to the knockout phase. This sets them up to play their Round of 32 match in Mexico City, with the possibility of facing England if Thomas Tuchel’s side wins their group and subsequent knockout match.

South Korea, despite the loss, still hold a strong chance of advancing thanks to their opening win against the Czech Republic. Their next game will be against South Africa on Thursday at 02:00 BST in Monterrey. Meanwhile, Mexico will meet the Czech Republic simultaneously in Mexico City.
