Kylian Mbappé Defends Himself Against Dembélé and Raphinha Comparison Ahead of Champions League Match

Kylian Mbappé Responds to Criticism Over Defensive Effort

Kylian Mbappé pushed back on criticisms regarding his defensive contributions before Real Madrid's Champions League opener against Inter Milan. The French forward acknowledged that both he and the team need to improve when out of possession but rejected the notion that he and Vinícius Júnior alone bear the responsibility.

Press Conference Highlights

During Monday’s press conference, Mbappé was questioned about Real Madrid’s pressing tactics. He was compared to forwards like Ousmane Dembélé and Raphinha, who have been praised for their defensive work when their teams lose the ball. Mbappé quickly challenged this comparison, noting the differences in roles and strengths among players.

“Only me and Vini?” Mbappé said, questioning why the focus was solely on him and Vinícius.

He then joked, emphasizing his goal-scoring record: “I can play the fool and tell you that I score more goals than the two you mentioned, and they have to score more goals to be like me. Everyone is different.”

The Need for Teamwide Improvement

Mbappé admitted improvement is necessary, stating, “Of course we have to improve, we have to improve. And I think it’s completely natural how each player is.” He stressed that he doesn’t want his game judged solely by comparing every aspect with other forwards, adding, “I want to do things intelligently and say that, of course, I have to improve and all that. But I don’t like to compare because I think I do many things that others don’t.”

The France international extended the discussion beyond attackers, saying every Real Madrid player must contribute defensively: “But I agree that, of course, I and all the Real Madrid players have to improve in this aspect to help the defense and so that we can get fewer chances and fewer goals.”

Improving Possession to Ease Defensive Pressure

Mbappé also believes better ball control can boost the team's defense by limiting opponents' chances: “I also think that we need to manage things better with the ball to create more scoring opportunities.”

He described the constant pursuit of improvement as part of competing at the highest level: “That’s the life of a top-level team that wants to be the best in the world. There are many things you have to improve every day, and that’s just how it is.”

Looking Ahead to Champions League Clash

Real Madrid now prepare to face Inter Milan in their opening match of the Champions League. Mbappé remains a central figure in their attack, though debates about his defensive work continue. His remarks made it clear he accepts the need for growth but insists that defensive duties belong to the entire squad.
