Kylian Mbappe Surpasses Ronaldo’s World Cup Record with Brace in France’s Win Over Sweden

Kylian Mbappe has surpassed the Brazilian great Ronaldo in World Cup history following a stunning display during France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden. The Real Madrid forward scored twice to secure Les Bleus’ spot in the round of 16 with authority.

The milestone came just before halftime. After a slick one-two exchange with Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe outpaced Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres and fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. This marked Mbappe’s ninth goal in World Cup knockout matches, breaking the previous record held by Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo.

"I'm very aware of who I am, how I play, what I should do, but it's not just about me," Mbappe said. "The whole team knows what needs to be done. A new phase of the tournament has started today. We played well but were a bit cautious early on. We could have done better."

Mbappe’s impact didn’t stop there. After Bradley Barcola extended France’s lead shortly after the break, Mbappe sealed the win in the 74th minute. Receiving a perfectly timed pass from Michael Olise, he calmly placed the ball into the far corner, putting the match beyond doubt.

This was Mbappe’s sixth goal of the 2026 World Cup, tying him with Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. More impressively, his 18 World Cup goals now put him just one behind Messi’s all-time record of 19.

Following the historic performance, Mbappe rushed to celebrate with head coach Didier Deschamps. It was an emotional moment, as Deschamps had missed France’s final group game against Norway due to his mother’s funeral.

"He knows he will never be alone with us, and we will always support him," Mbappe shared. Deschamps responded, "We're on a mission – and so am I with them."

France’s 3-0 victory marked their largest knockout stage win since the 1998 World Cup final against Brazil. Next up is a high-stakes round of 16 clash with Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4. With Mbappe in such lethal form and the team performing strongly, Les Bleus look ready to make a deep run as the tournament tightens.
