Mason Mount's Injury Scare for Manchester United Ahead of New Season
Mason Mount handed Manchester United an unwelcome scare in Gothenburg as he limped out of their pre-season clash with Paris Saint-Germain after just 20 minutes, casting a shadow over Michael Carrick’s preparations for the new campaign.
The midfielder, one of United’s standout performers across the summer friendlies, signalled discomfort midway through the first half and was swiftly withdrawn, with Tyler Fletcher sent on in his place. Mount was able to jog from the pitch and held a brief conversation with medical staff on the touchline, but the exact nature and severity of the problem remained unclear.
Carrick, with the start of the 2026/27 season less than a fortnight away, was in no mood to gamble. Mount’s history demands caution. Since his £55million move from Chelsea in 2023, injuries have repeatedly cut into his rhythm and reputation, limiting him to just 25 Premier League starts across three seasons. Every twinge now feels loaded.
United were already chasing the game when Mount departed. Ibrahim Mbaye had stunned them in the second minute, punishing a sluggish start to put PSG 1-0 up. The early goal jolted United, who took time to settle before finally finding a foothold.
The response arrived on 32 minutes. Amad Diallo drove at the PSG back line, slipped a clever ball into Bryan Mbeumo, and the forward drilled a low finish into the bottom corner. It was a sharp, confident strike, the kind of goal that has underpinned a largely promising pre-season.
This tour has been anything but dull. United have already suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, dismantled Rosenborg 5-0 and edged Atletico Madrid 2-1. The PSG test in Sweden was another step up in intensity, and Carrick’s side will not get much breathing space now: a trip to Ireland to face Leeds on Wednesday, then on to Wroclaw to meet AC Milan next Saturday.
Just as the Mount situation seemed the main concern, another problem surfaced. In the second half, veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton was forced off, replaced by Dermot Mee after appearing to suffer a hamstring injury. For a manager trying to build stability before opening day, two potential muscle issues in one afternoon is exactly the kind of headache he did not need.
The timing is awkward. United open their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Hull City on August 22, a fixture that already carries an expectation of a fast start. Carrick has had to integrate players returning late from World Cup duty, and Mount had been using that head start to full effect, emerging as one of the most influential figures in the warm-up games.
He has not just been playing well; he has been growing into a role. In Norway, Mount wore the captain’s armband and spoke recently about embracing leadership, describing himself as someone who leads by example and never stops working. With a young squad around him in pre-season, he has relished guiding less experienced teammates, on and off the pitch.
That is part of why this knock will concern Carrick. United have invested heavily to reshape their midfield, spending a combined £87million this summer on Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Competition for places in the centre of the pitch will be fierce, and Mount has been pushing hard to secure a starting berth when Hull arrive at Old Trafford.
For now, United will wait for the medical verdict. If this proves to be nothing more than a precautionary withdrawal, Mount’s summer can still be framed as a platform for revival after three stop-start years. If the news is worse, Carrick’s carefully assembled midfield plan will need a rethink before a ball is kicked in anger.
