Martin Terrier weighs Ligue 1 return as Rennes and Marseille pursue

Two years after swapping Roazhon Park for the BayArena, Martin Terrier is edging towards a return to familiar territory. The Bayer Leverkusen forward, 29, is in talks over a move back to Ligue 1, with former club Rennes and rivals Marseille both pushing to bring him home, according to Foot Mercato.

It would mark the end of a difficult German chapter. Terrier arrived in Leverkusen with momentum and expectations after three prolific seasons in Brittany, but he never truly settled. Seven goals in 44 games tell the story of a stop-start spell, his progress repeatedly cut down by fitness issues, including a serious Achilles tear last year that stalled any hope of a resurgence under Xabi Alonso.

On paper, Leverkusen still hold the cards. Terrier has three years left on his contract with the newly crowned Bundesliga powerhouse. On the pitch, though, the landscape is different. The club where Terrier produced some of the best football of his career — three standout campaigns that pushed him to the fringes of the France conversation without ever yielding a first cap — is back at the table. Discussions are underway over a reunion, with the Bretons assessing their attacking options at a time when Switzerland international Breel Embolo is drawing interest from elsewhere.

The logic is clear. Should Embolo move on, Rennes will need proven firepower and a player who already understands the club’s structure and expectations. Terrier, at his best, was that and more: intelligent movement between the lines, a clean left foot, and the knack for decisive goals in big domestic fixtures.

Marseille's Pursuit

But this is not a one-club race.

Marseille have entered the conversation with intent. Set for UEFA Europa League football and rebuilding their frontline after the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood, OM are hunting for at least one striker who can slot in quickly and handle the pressure of the Vélodrome. Terrier fits the profile: Ligue 1-tested, technically polished, and capable of operating across the front line.

There is another card Marseille can play. On the touchline at the Vélodrome stands Bruno Genesio, the coach who oversaw Terrier’s peak years at Rennes between 2021 and 2023. Genesio knows exactly how to use him, how to unlock his timing in the box and his understanding of space. For a player looking to relaunch his career at 29, that kind of tactical and personal trust carries weight.

So the choice in front of Terrier is a compelling one. A return to Rennes, the club where he became a key Ligue 1 figure, in a setting he knows intimately. Or a fresh challenge with Marseille, a giant of French football, under a coach who already helped shape the best version of him.
