Martin O'Neill Leaves Hospital in Good Form
Martin O'Neill has left hospital and is “in good form” after undergoing a minor procedure, with Celtic hopeful their veteran manager could yet return to the touchline as early as this weekend.
The 74-year-old was discharged on Wednesday, easing fears that had grown after the club confirmed he had required treatment. Speculation had swirled. Celtic moved quickly to clarify: it was a “small procedure”, nothing more dramatic, but still serious enough to remove their manager from the daily grind of a title race.

At Lennoxtown, Shaun Maloney cut a quietly buoyant figure as he delivered the update ahead of Sunday’s William Hill Premiership trip to Kilmarnock.
“I went to see him last night. He got out of hospital yesterday,” the assistant said. “He was in good form last night, loads better than he was Monday, Tuesday. Hopefully those sort of positive feelings continue.”
No guarantees, though. No heroic rush back to the dugout just for optics.
There is, Maloney stressed, no fixed timeline for O’Neill’s return. The manager’s involvement in Sunday’s match will be a late call, made on his terms and his health.
“No timeline. So even for the game at the weekend, it's sort of day-to-day,” Maloney explained. “I'll speak to him this afternoon and then he'll make a call for tomorrow and then I'd imagine he'll make the call for the game at the weekend.
“If it's this weekend, great, if it isn't, we'll prepare for it without him.”
That, for now, is the balance Celtic must strike: a team still very much under O’Neill’s direction, even if the manager is temporarily working from a distance.
Maloney confirmed that O’Neill had already been involved in preparations for Kilmarnock, despite not being present on the training pitch on Thursday. The staff visited him on Wednesday to go over plans for Rugby Park, a sign that the Northern Irishman remains hands-on, even in recovery.
“We saw him last night, with regards to the preparation for the game and so he wasn't in today,” Maloney said. The implication was clear: the manager’s fingerprints are still on everything Celtic do this week, whether or not he emerges from the tunnel on Sunday.
Celtic had earlier used their official website to address the swirl of rumours around O’Neill’s condition, confirming the hospital procedure and asking for space as he recuperates.
“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital,” the club said. “We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes.
“We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”
That privacy remains paramount, even as supporters look anxiously toward the weekend. The club have their message clear: O’Neill is recovering, he is improving, and he will decide when he is ready to step back into the technical area.
If that moment comes at Rugby Park, it will give Celtic an emotional lift in a fixture that already carries weight in the title narrative. If it doesn’t, Maloney and the backroom staff know the script: keep the team moving, keep the standards high, and hold the fort until the man at the centre of it all is ready to walk back into the storm.
