O’Neill was on the touchline as recently as Monday, overseeing Celtic’s opening league fixture and 1-0 win over Dundee at Parkhead as the champions began the defence of their title. His presence there underlined how recent and relatively minor this medical intervention is understood to be, even if the club is keeping specifics behind closed doors.

Celtic’s statement read in full: “In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital.
“We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes.
“We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”
The club have drawn a firm line there. Until O’Neill walks back through the doors at the training ground, that request for space will define the story more than any speculation about the man who just delivered a double and now aims to drive Celtic through another demanding campaign.
