Mark van Bommel appointed Belgium head coach ahead of Euro 2028
Belgium have turned to a familiar rival to lead their next era, appointing former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as head coach on a deal that runs through Euro 2028.
The 49-year-old replaces Rudi Garcia, whose exit followed Belgium’s quarter-final defeat to eventual world champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Van Bommel will officially step into the role on 15 August, inheriting a squad rich in talent but still chasing a defining international triumph.
From Antwerp success to the Red Devils
Van Bommel arrives with his reputation in Belgium already firmly established. At Royal Antwerp he built a winning machine, delivering the Belgian league title, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup during a highly successful two-year spell. Those trophies did not just fill the cabinet; they showed he could impose structure, intensity and a clear identity in a demanding environment.
Now he moves from club to country, from Antwerp red to the Red Devils.
“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” Van Bommel said. “Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”
The words fit the man: direct, uncompromising, steeped in elite football. As a former midfield enforcer for the Netherlands, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Van Bommel knows what it looks like to operate at the game’s highest level. Belgium’s hierarchy are banking on that edge.
Backing from the top
Belgian Football Association sporting director Vincent Mannaert underlined exactly why the federation has made this bet.
He pointed to Van Bommel’s “international experience as both a coach and player” as the key to helping the Red Devils “continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential”.
That is the brief in one line: turn promise into something tangible. The so-called golden generation has already passed its peak, but the next wave is pushing through. Belgium now need a coach who can weld those pieces together quickly.
A Dutch core on the bench
Van Bommel will not be alone in the technical area. He will be assisted by Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond, forming a staff heavy on Dutch influence and European know-how.
Zenden brings experience from major clubs and tournaments, Martens offers a sharp tactical eye and strong links to Belgian football, while Robbemond has long been a trusted lieutenant for Van Bommel. It is a group built for cohesion and clarity, not experimentation on the fly.
They will need that unity immediately.
Brutal first test
There is no gentle introduction to international management here. Van Bommel’s early assignment is to navigate a brutal run of Nations League fixtures against Italy, France and Turkey across September and October.
Those games will expose flaws, but they will also reveal how quickly his ideas take hold. Discipline. Ambition. Bravery. All three will be required against that calibre of opposition.
Belgium have made their choice. They have crossed the border, handed the keys to a former Dutch captain and asked him to reshape a team still searching for its crowning moment.
