Marcus Rashford has been handed an unexpected opening at Manchester United – not on the pitch yet, but through the cameras now sweeping through Old Trafford.
The forward, frozen out since December 2024 and seemingly destined to be sold, has been invited by United’s hierarchy to feature in the club’s upcoming Amazon documentary, All or Nothing – Manchester United. On the surface it is a media request. In reality, it looks like something far more significant: a hint that the door at Old Trafford has not been slammed shut on him after all.
From outcast to possible leading man?
United were widely expected to cash in on Rashford this summer. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been keen to trim a bloated wage bill, and Rashford, 28, appeared an obvious candidate to go once he fell out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim.
He has not played a competitive minute for the club since before Christmas. He agitated for a move away from his boyhood side, clashed with Amorim, and was sent on loan first to Aston Villa and then to Barcelona in a bid to restart a career that had stalled alarmingly in Manchester.
The plan seemed clear. Perform abroad, secure a permanent transfer, draw a line under a complicated relationship with his hometown club.
Barcelona were given a £24 million option to buy. They walked away.
The Catalan club’s refusal to trigger the clause has thrown Rashford’s future back into uncertainty. He will now report back to United after his summer break, following his involvement with England at the World Cup, with no clarity over where he will actually be playing his football next season.
A lifeline behind the lens
Amid that uncertainty comes this invitation from United’s executives: take part in the fly-on-the-wall series that will chart Michael Carrick’s first full campaign in charge.
Rashford has not yet given an answer. He is still weighing up his next step, aware that several clubs are monitoring his situation and considering a move for him. But the very fact the club want him involved in a project designed to showcase the inner workings of the dressing room is striking.
This is not how you treat a player you are desperate to move on at the first opportunity. This is how you treat someone you might need again.

Filming for All or Nothing – Manchester United has already begun, with Amazon crews granted access as Carrick’s squad return for pre-season. They will follow the team through the entire campaign, from the training pitches at Carrington to the dressing room at Old Trafford.
Amazon had pushed for a similar series last season, but Amorim blocked the idea and refused to cooperate. Carrick has taken the opposite stance. United, for their part, insist the documentary fits with a wider push to be “as open and transparent as possible” with their vast global fanbase.
The project promises unprecedented behind-the-scenes footage at a club that has often felt closed off and heavily stage-managed in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson years. It will also shine an unforgiving light on those who feature most prominently.
Which brings the Rashford question into sharper focus. Do United really want a player they intend to discard sitting at the heart of such a high-profile portrayal of the club? Or are they bracing themselves for the possibility that, with Barcelona out and the market cool, they may have to reintegrate him under Carrick?
A career at a crossroads
Rashford’s relationship with United has rarely felt as fragile. He pushed to leave. Amorim pushed him away. Loans to Aston Villa and Barcelona underlined how far he had drifted from the centre of United’s plans.
